My wheels and axles are starting to rust noticeably. I have no clue what to do about this. Is there an easy fix? Thanks in advance for any advice.

sandblast and paint the wheel and the does the axle have pit rust or light surface rust?

No easy fix. You have to remove it completely to cure it. And then treat area with some form of paint or covering.

I take all my rusted parts in to be dipped in acid it takes a couple weeks but they are able to remove ALL the rust and paint, they give the parts back with a anti rust film that you remove with laquer thinner or naptha..then ready for primer/paint...check with a couple local bodyshops for someone who provides this service in your area...On my 200es I had all 3 wheels, support rings, the racks, foot pegs, hubs, frt axle, spindle, brake drum, and all assoceiated nuts, bolts and brackets done for $105.00.

Ahh, so no quick fix then.
Thanks everyone for your input. $105 doesn't seem like a bad price, but I'll miss my baby for the time it goes off-line.
Cheers!

What kind of bike is it?

I'd replace the steel wheels with aluminum ones. The axle rust will come off in minutes with a drill and a wire wheel. Living in a wet climate you'll still have to treat the axle with something to prevent it from coming back though.

the product you might be looking for is a product called "penatrol" (sp.) made by "FLOOD". you can find it in most paint stores including "Home Desprerate"...just ask if they carry "Flood Products"..

it does leave a membrane surface and is clear gloss in finish. After the removal of rust it should be applied in a thin coat using a cotton cloth..

it appears to be an oil out of its container but it dries hard and preserves metal..use it as you would "plastic renew" (multiple THIN coats allow each to dry fully before additional applications)

it also restores fiberglass on boats and will make a chalked out scud look brand new

always test product you unfamiliar with on a small area before you piliage the whole thing.

there are also chemicals availiable to neutralize rust..one product that comes to mind is "rust buster" . but i havent seen it in a while and don't know if it's still availible...it comes as a milky white fluid that turns rust black

"penatrol" also neutrilizes rust and reacts with rubber so be careful. make sure that surfaces are clean because it will trap the dirt in it's finish. it comes in quart size packages for about 10 bucks..a quart size is enough to do complete exteriors on (3) 24ft scuds..so you see a little goes a long way

This is all valuable information and I'm grateful for it.
The trike is a '82 or '83 185s. It had very minimal use until I bought it about 20 months ago. Since then, it's seen weekly mud, snow, water, sticks, rocks, mortar attacks, you name it.
The rust is just surface rust at this point. I just started noticing it the other day, but it is very noticeable, just not very deep.
Thanks again.

Axles will get anything you put on them worn off pretty easily. Imo, it's probably easier to just knock the rust off with the wire wheel once in a while. Hit it with WD-40 after wet rides between cleanings.

Yeah I have used a dewalt 4 1/2 inch grinder/cutter (hand held) with the wire wheel attatchment. The extra speed gets it off FAST. Just be sure to wear safty glasses with this method because one the wire wheel starts to go they start shooting everywhere. If i do this I usually have to pluck my clothes like I wrestled with a porcupine

yeah, WD is awesome, when i ride around on my R in the winter, i just cover the chain, sprockets and all bare steel components in WD, i grease my chain before though...it does look a little crappy when everything gets covered in greasy stuff, but NOTHING rusts, i cleaned the 954's axle with a wire brush before i got a durablue and it rusted in like 2 weeks, but i didnt cover it in anything.....i am getting a durablue as soon as i can, the finish on those lasts forever, i think its nickel, but i have a mojave with a katana motor in it and i salvaged the chassis from some crazy redneck that had it outside for 3 years straight in snow and everything, it dosnt have one bit of corrosion on it....idk....my exp...

Sounds cool.
I got goggles.
I got a wire wheel.
I got a drill.
I got firefighters' bunker gear that shards of flying metal hopefully won't stick into like porcupine quills.
Now all I need is some beer and my ghetto blaster and go at 'er!
Thanks again and all other tips gratefully accepted.
P.S. This is not a mint showpiece or nothing, just the everyday cruiser so it doens't have to be beautiful, I just want to get rid of the rust before it gets bad.
