I just bought OEM front and rear plastic for my 87 TRX250R. The front did not come with fender stays. Do I really need them or don't they matter??? Also the rear fender stay I do have, however I don't understand how to mount it. Do the ends of the stay bolt into the plastic or are they just wedged in. I looked at the schematics online but they don't show the mounting. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have full front fenders you will probably want to find them so your fenders don't droop. The rear just wedges in and bolts down to the seat mount.
I don't use the front stays but all of my front fenders are trimmed.

are you talking about the top ones or the ones on the side of the frame. You need the ones on the side, so the fenders don't fly around alot. 86/87 and 88/89 used different ones, so beware of what year you buy. As for the rear fenders I don't know how the stabilizing wire works, as I never had one on mine, nor do I on my 350x, 200x and atc250r.

My trx250R has the rear one. Its hard to explain but I'll try.
The wire peice is shaped kind of like this: /--\ The middle cross over (straight part) bolts underneath a small bracket on the bottom side of the fenders. Then, each end (On OEM fenders) has a small curve on it and it hooks into a place that is made into the fenders for them to catch and hold onto. On Maier fenders, you have to drill a hole and use a little 90 degree bracket and hang it in there.

If you don't use the rear bracket, you risk burning/melting your fender....my Buddy learned it the hard way...BRNAD NEW red 88 rears....big smear/melt spot...kinda looks like all the T4s with the FMF exhaust! Use a bracket.
