View Full Version : 86R clutch replacement
Hello fellow Trikehounds, I have a bone stock 86R that I've had since new. My original clutch is finally starting to feel funny. It doesn't slip but it is getting grabby and doesn't engage at the same spot all the time. I'm sure it's time to replace it but I've never done that before. Can someone give me a rundown on what to do, what parts to get, and any special tools I might need? It's been a solid reliable bike for almost 20 years and I want to keep it going as long as I can. Thanks, Kel.

If you are mechanically inclined it will be pretty obvious as you take it apart, how it goes back together. From the symptoms you describe, the clutch basket probably has grooves worn in it. The 250R is notorious for this. Youll have to visiually check it when you get it off. You can get an aftermarket billeted clutch basket for probably less than a new OEM one. Aside from the basket, if its worn, I would suggest new disks, and fibers, and new springs. Go with OEM Honda ones. If you got this many years out of the original, dont let anybody talk you into heavy duty Barnett or other aftermarket crap.
Dammit!

Are billet baskets as strong as OEM? I didn't realize they made those.
Thanks TimSR, good info and advice. I'm fairly mechanical, just not that experienced. It's been such a good Trike I haven't had to work on it much.Kel.

They hold up against grooving better than oem ones. I got the one for my R mine from janssenracing.com .

Get a shop manual. They're worth every penny.

Sweet. Thanks for the tip. I had no idea they made those and I'm gonna have to take a look at my clutch soon. Doesn't feel like I'm getting all the power to the back wheels anymore.

get a hinson basket and a inner clutch hub for an 89' (idk if they are different), and a clutch update kit from Nac's...which consists of the 89' R's updated and re-engineered clutch engagement parts....
