Replaced my fathers rear breaks on his 200m. Seems they will engage, but not dis engage. I replaced the shoes, springs, return spring, both hand and foot cables. Even took the shaft out from the drum and cleanes and lightly greased that, they still just don't want to release. Plus, I have to have the cables almost adjusted fully to their limit before they willl engage. Any sugguestions? Thanks!!

the brake arm that engages the brakes is adjustable. i am talking about the arm that all the cables are attached to. it is on a splined shaft (cam). loosen it up and move it back a few notches. when you do this move all your brake adjustments all the way in first. doing this you'll have lots of adjustment again.sticky brakes? when you adjust the lever this problem may disappear. if it don't check the brake cam, the part of the cam that spreads the shoes may be warn out, if so weld er up to build it back or replace it.and check the return springs that keeps the shoes together they may be stretched out as well. i hate drums my 2 cents

There are 2 punch marks on the brake cam part with the splines, and the brake arm. Make sure these are lined up properly. Did you have the spring for the brake cam when you reinstalled? Is it in correctly? Is it worn?
Maybe try another set of brake shoe springs, i think they are the leading cause of the springs actually returning to where they are supposed to be.
Hope this helps,
Mike

While you had it apart, Did you clean and lube up the cam? It's #7 in the picture below. If you didn't I would start there.

Same thing happened to my 200M. Everything had been gone through, replaced and serviced as neccesary. They still stuck. I ended up fabbing a bracket that bolted to the rear drum cover, and to it I attached a spring that would pull the cam arm back. Never have had a problem since.

clean up the drum.. take sand-paper to it and then if you have alcohol or thinner on a rag, wipe down the drum...
even consider filing the edges of the pads a bit on the corners close to the springs.
