350X Speedo Head Intall Question. Wiring?

Ok Speedo Freaks. Got a question. My harness on the bike has a White female and Brown female wire for the speedo. My speedo head has two wires coming from it that split into 4 wires. They are Brown and Green in color. 2 are female and 2 are male. Basically a Brown female and male wire, and a Green female and male wire. So being that my harness's wires are female, I took the brown male from the speedo and stuck it in my brown female harness wire. I took my white female wire and hooked it to the male green. Fired the bike up to check and see if the lights worked and they were on. However when I turned the headlights on the speedo lights went off. I could switch between HI and Low beam and they would go on and off too. WTF :o . Im lost on that deal. I dont have to have the lights but it would be nice to have it hooked up right. I tried to switch the wires around and it did the same thing. Anyone. Bruce? John?

Hmmm... seems like I matched the colors up... isn't there a brown and green wires in there? Or is there a wire in there that wasn't ever used? Yeah.. that's it... seems like the 350X wiring harness has a wire in there that is only used for the speedo/tach. I'll dig out the instructions for my speedo install for my 350X. Bruce

EDIT - They must be down to the shop. I'll look at it tomorrow. If I can't find the instructions, I'll look on my 350X itself.

Those 2 are the only 2 stray wires that are there. I havent seen any others. Let me know bro.

Ahhhh.... you only need ONE stray wire... the other one you disconnect from the headlight pig tail to "splice" into the circuit. Match up the color's man! :p

Well... seems like you disconnect a green wire, so you have a male and female to use. Then the brown wire is used for the Tach and the Speedo. The white/yellow wire is used only on the tach. You should have a brown female connector left over.

Here's a scan of the Tachometer instructions...you should have a wire like the one on the right, but with a male brown too. That is to feed the instrument light. The wire on the left in the diagram is to electronically feed the Tachometer itself.

Yes... you need to disconnect one of the green wires to a headlight. go male HL to female speedo ... go female HL to male speedo...

Also, some other FYI's.... you will notice the Tachometer mount goes in the same exact spot as a speedo mount on a 350X. The "post" holes are rotated and are further apart than the speedos. Only place you see a speedo and tach side byside is in the Hondaline manual for late 85/86. However... I have a feeling you will be seeing some speedo/tach setups this year at Trikefest. :naughty:

If you hook up the wires to the Brown / green wires that go to the taillight. These are connected inbehind the headlight.

I only had a few minutes this afternoon to mess with it. I unhooked the green wire from the left headlight and hooked it to the speedos green, and hook the other brown to the open brown on my harness. It didnt come on at all. So, im like WTF!! All this bad info from Bruce. :p Just kidding. Did I do something wrong? Pics will be coming soon. Promise. Oh yeah I got me some decent stock bars on it now too.

I got both my speedo's wired on the first try. :p Must be that quality time I spent in Athens, GA. Go DAWGS! :D
