I took the SX out in the snow today and it was shifting fine going up and down through all the gears. Then after awhile when I shifted down the shifter stayed down and I had to gently pull it back up with my foot. I hopped off and cleared anything on or around the shifter and away I went. I shifted down again and as before it just stayed down. so I took it back to the garage, pulled the shifter off and put some Penitrating oil on the shifting shaft (the piece that the shifter goes on). And it still sticks when I shift down but never if I'm goin up in gears. Do I need to adjust the clutch? Any Ideas?

You either lost a spring or a pin.

But, does the shifter slip on the splines? or is the shifter and the shaft solid, just not comming back ?

its solid. just not comming back up.

And if I didnt clarify before when i bring it up after like 1/16th of an inch it will jump into gear and the shifter will be where it is supposed to be.

It's not the clutch, pull off the left cover and you'll find the problem that ALL SX's go through....

Right before I bought it.
It had the exact same symptoms.

He replaced the shift shaft.
Don't know how much it cost but it couldn't have been that high.

Don't worry....removing the side cover isn't any big deal.
Grab your manual and take your time.

I think I will practice on my crappy SX engine first (the one that we had to weld the cintrificle clutch on, He He :D). I dont really like pulling side covers off because I cant normally put them back on. My uncle used to repair ATVs so ill see if he will do it if I become uncomfortable.

Just remember that if you pull the shift shaft out of the left side that there is a thrust washer over on the right side where the shift shaft lever splines into the reverse shaft arm. You want to make sure that gets back in there correctly. I usually lay it on the side or yank the right cover too just to make sure it's in place. Remember too that the SX side covers can be a pain in the but to remove and sometimes removing foot peg bolts (after they snap....) can help clear the covers along with removing the motor mounting bolts. Definately get some help, when I was 16yo I messed up quite a few things while "learning"....
