Here are a few pics of my 86 250r project. The swing arm is off being painted, I've got a blue anodized exhaust flange and red anodized rear break stay coming for it. The rear shock is out being rebuilt and maybe re-valved for my riding style at Hygear suspension. I've got all OEM plastics, but the seat/cover is off an 85 (this is ok with me since I like the "250r" better than "ATC" on the seat anyway. Just waiting on a few parts to come in and I can start putting it back together. Looking forward to the carb boot to come in so I can fire it up and hear what the full FMF system sounds like. Should be a fun summer! :D

3leggeddog the caliper does bolt to a linkage arm that bolts to the plate.

Edited for brain fart!

DYNO why did you get rid of the EX? That thing was so awesome, but a 250r with TAG bars is better. I love when people put quality bars on their trikes. Keep us updated. Nice trike.

toyota200x, the 400ex was fun but I was ready for a new project. Gets expensive but I love tinkering on ATVs and sleds. Missed my old tri Z so figured why not try a 250r? So here I am re-building a 86 R. Couldn't agree more with you about buying good bars, you should have seen the ones that came off this thing!

Its nice to see your back from the dark side :w00t: I just did an 85 myself. It sure is a ton easier finding parts for the LQ than it is for the Tri Z's. Looking good!

Looking real good Dynofox. Very oringinal looking, what is your estimate on when it will be done? and what tires are you using for it?

thanks- Kintore

Well this project went a little over budget, paid a little more for the machine than I should have. Once it's all said and done I will have in the neighborhood of $2500 into it (including price of trike). Could have been cheaper but I bought some parts like the billet brake stay and exhaust flange, rear wave rotor and had the rear shock serviced even thought it wasn't really blown (but the rebound adjuster was froze up so they were going to take care of that). I figure you really can't get a better 3-wheeler than a 86 250r so I figured why not spend some extra money make it nice. Hey it's only money right! LOL At some point I would like to get the side covers for the motor polished, but who knows. As for tires, it came with some nice holeshots on douglas 10 inch rims but I wanted to go with the gold rear rims so I picked up a pair of new take off dunlop radials for it (tires from a 450r, z400, raptor ect). The front tire will be the one that's on it now (oem).

I figured someone would bring that statement up! LOL What are the reasons you prefer your Z to the R? Just curious. From what little I've ridden the R it seems to be a lot more of a handful motor wise than my Z was, this will be fun in a lot of places but could lead to problems in the tight woods or on steep hills. I'm hoping I like it and want to keep it for awhile! I have a problem with buying these things, dumping lots of money into them and then getting bored and moving on to the next money pit. LOL I'm sure there are many others that share this same problem with me on the boards. :Bounce

Here's my book:

I am just kidding the R is a great trike. First keep in mind that I have never ridden an 85 Tri-Z. I might feel differently if I had ridden one. As far as the 86 is concerned, people who own both (i.e., Denn - who is Iraq right now) tell me they feel very very different. I know alot of folks have 86 parts on thier 85's so in truth things have gotten blurry. As far as a straight 86 vs. a straight 86 R: I like the Tri Z better.

Here's why:

Stock for stock both my 86's ( the R and Z) and quite similar in mid range (except that the R does hit harder and pulls slightly longer). I like to ride fast and in open spaces but that still does not mean that I don't need some good low end. The Z is just without comparison in that area.

Honestly, the Z:

- is more corfotable because the seating area is not cramped (the R is small!)
- has much much better low end (the R has virtually none)
- has less mid range but gives you a better power spread
- has much better straight line stability (My R tends to hop alot due to the shortened wheelbase)
- I like the looks of the 86 Z over the R (of course this is subjective)

All in all, I listened to the stories for years (in Dirt Wheels...and other placces) about how Z's are no where near as fast, slow turners, etc.

I read an ATV News test that Denn from these boards sent me where the 86 Z was chosen on top of both the 86 Tecate and 86 R. The test was very detailed and included lap times with different riders on differnet types of courses. The Z had the fastest times because of two reasons:

1) better bottom end allowed it power out of corners (instead of bogging or spinning the wheels)
2) while the stock version tested had 21 inch rear tires it also had the most steering lock of any of the 250cc two strokes. So much like the Honda short track kit (hmmm...wonder why they released it) the Z allow you to attack the corners without fear of spinning out.

The z's motor was also noted as being the best due to the great low end and ample mid range, and improved suspension for 1986.

Nevertheless....

I still believed an R would be vastly superior. Now I have a mint 86 R and while I won't ever sell it....the motor gets B O R I N G!!!

Yes I said it!! The Z has broader powerband so it is more fun for me to ride. The R is either on the pipe or off. Its like riding and light switch. Its not a matter of power its how the power is produced.

My zilla has way more power than both my Z or my R, but the powerband is so wide that can have a varied riding experience. It not just forcing you to be on the pipe constantly. The Z gives me much more flexibility and that's why I prefer it. Again alot of guys will think that I am sayign the R is too fast for me......YEAH RIGHT...NOT TRUE.

What I am saying is that the power delivery range is slim and that make the trike less adaptable and sometimes boring (for me at least) My feelings!

Oh and I have ridden about five 250R's all 85's and 86's and they feel exactly the same to me.

Don't do too much more....ride it first and see how you like it!!

Listen I am nit-picking here BUT giving you my opinions.

Honestly both are awesome awesome trikes. I am really just splitting hairs. If anyone needs me I'll be in a witness protection service so the 'R' guys don't kill me!

I can hear them now: 'traitor', 'traitor'.
