Any of you that are into guns and know anything about a british 303 tell me. I am thinking about purchasing one. Tell me all you can about them. Are they worth anything? If not they should be, right? Thanks

I've got one, a 1942 NO.1 MK.4, nice gun, shoot's 2 inch groups at 100 yards with orig sights and remington ammo, I see them for sale in shotgun news for like $120 in good condition, I like the safety on them, put the trigger pull is real hard.

I have four of them. Which model are you looking at? I found the p-14 to be the most accurate. Both of my #1's will outshoot my #4. Very easy & fast to bolt (except p-14) b/c they cock on closing. Two of my friends hunt w/ theirs and it preforms well on southern whitetails. Easy to reload for. And most importantly just plain fun to shoot.

I have a .303 of some kind that was made into a sporter, it shoots nice prolly pretty comparable to my m-44 nagaunt but a little less powerful. As far as cost goes they are all over in shops and shows out here for under 100.00$ usally, but they are pretty banged up. I don't think they hold any real value like most the other surplus bolt actions from around the world. If you want a similar gun for practically nothing get a m-44, almost any gun shop should be able to sell you one for under $70.00 bucks, Good for plinking and the surplus 7.62x59 rounds won't break the bank once you find a good source for em.------Good Luck

I'm not sure what model this is, but the guy wants $75 for it. It has a clip that holds what looks like 5 shells but maybe way more. It is a bolt action, and is in over all decent shape. I am thinking he will trade me for my Savage Arms 20 guage though, but is $75 a fair deal?

yea sounds like a good deal if it is clean, I think you'll have fun with it--find a shop that carries surplus .303 ammo, they dont shoot as good as remington but they are way cheaper.

Look under the bolt handle on the band around the stock, year, and model should be there.

That would be a even trade, anouther good gun is the turkish mauser, shoot's 7.92x57 (8mm mauser) thay're like $50 and the ammo is like $5 for 75 rounds of military surplus, anouther nice gun(that I also have) is the SKS, russian, chinese, romanian, etc, holds 10 rounds and is semi-auto insted of bolt action, there around $150-200 in decent shape, check out www.burnsbro.com www.marstar.com www.wholesalegunsandammo.com

Do not buy an SKS, for the love of god! I had one and I gave it away :x
it would only shoot without jammin about 50% of the time, I got my AK and I will never own another one again, too much of a headache for me. You can get a SAR-1 for about 300-350 and it will never jam, throw it in the mud, sand, lake, don't matter it will always shoot.

Thats not typical. Ive fired several hundred rounds through my Chinese SKS and its never jammed.

A lot of autoloaders are fincky about the ammunition, and that may have been your problem, if not an actual mechanicical problem.

I shot a couple other ones that jam, but everyone I know sez that it is just me :? And I always use the same ammo that I shoot in my SAR-1
Wolf 7.62x39 122gr. FMJ non-corrosive berden primed, never had a problem in any of my guns, SAR, MAUDI, CHINESE, all my friends guns shoot fine with this ammo, What do you shoot??

I've had 7 SKS's,2 russian both made at Tula, 2 Romanian, 1 yugo, and 2 chinese(factory 26) only the romanian jammed and that was because when I first got it it had been siting in storage for 10 years and was soaked in cosmoline(which was like greese and jammed the bolt) I cleaned it real good and it shoot just fine, even with cheap russian mil-surp ammo, chinese one's are good, yugo's and russian are the best(best mechineing) I'd bet it was just the one you had.

... Heres the picture of some of my babies I posted a few weeks ago. The .303 is a Gibbs Enfield No.5 Jungle carbine - its basically a No.4 mk.1-4 action in the No.5 pattern. The No.5 enfields were one of the most handome bolt action military rifles ever made but they had one basic flaw - in lightening the action of the No.4 for jungle warfare by cutting away some of the metal in and around the breech to make the weapon weigh less, the rifle developed a "wandering zero". Basically you zero the sights in today and it will shoot perfectly, take the gun out shooting tomarrow and it will miss by a mile. Gibbs reproduced the rifles, but used No.4 actions, which got rid of the zeroing problem, and they shoot wonderfully now. As a side note, your Lee-Enfield No.1 SMLE's and No. 1 action variants shoot a little more acurately than the later No.4 patterns because of the type of sights used - a graduated, metered ramp and blade. The No.4's use a rotating peep sight, which was easier for new recruits to master and was adequate for most battlefield ranges. As far the SKS goes, mine is a Chineese Norinco Type 56 with a zytle "Dragonov" stock, "Cutts" type compensator, bayonet lug A-Square bi-pod, and a red dot sight. It is deadly accurate at iron sight range (25-50yrds) and jams about as much as my Romainian AKM - which is rare - maybe once every 500/1000 rds. There are two secrets to keeping any automatic millitary rifle from jaming. 1) keep the chamber clean. Anyone who owns an AK or SKS variant will tell you that. And they will tell you the first time they ripped a rim off a shell because they didnt keep it clean, they were pissed because they didn't buy the little .50 cent shell extractor and it ruined their day at the range. 2) only shoot ammo throught the weapon that was designed for it - I.E. Millitary ball or FMJ's - the only problems I ever had with feeding my Russians involved using hollow point ammo. Hollow points will only stove pipe or point stick in the breech - dont buy them. I was lucky to get a whole crate of pre-ban Norinco AP (armor piercing, steel core) 7.62x39 ammo when I purchased my SKS. It shoots flawlessly throught both the SKS and the AKM. I usually shoot Wolf as well, but only the FMJ stuff. Finally my advice is simple - buy an Enfield and an SKS - you can never have TOO many guns!!!!!!!

O.K. The 1916 is date it was built. Shtle May be smele? Any way means Short Mag. Lee Enfield. We call them Smellys, lol. The #3 should have a Mk after it. Like No.1 Mk3 or No.1 Mk3*. The Mk3 was groved for mag. cutoff. The mk3* was not. The no. 4 's are marked like No4 Mk1. Also should have the plant where it was made. All of mine are BSA's. Don't exactly remember about the Shtle will dig one out of the safe and look.
