thought you might find this story as a amusing as i did.
went ridin with a couple new guys today and the one dude had a 04 yfz450.a very nice bike, but over rated in my opinion.it rode real nice and was no sack less pos by any means.but when it came down to the drags it just couldn't hang.the bike seemed to hit hard down low, fall off on the mid range and then begin to pull a little on top,but ran nothing like i expected.dirt wheels claims it to be the cats meow,i find thats a little blown up.i've now rode both the trx,and yfz 450's,to which i have to say the trx was more impressive.this guy couldn't belive his 7000 dollar quad got smoked by a 20 year old trike.i spanked him by about 3 bike lenghts.my bike is not stock and neither was his.both had a pipe and silencer and the yfz was geared down from stock trim.
from the holeshot to the finish i never questioned if i would win.i felt bad and
good at the same time.bad for him, good for me.man trikes are great!!!!!

you think your kill is good, you gotta see when you smoke them in the woods. I was giving a bunch of guys on 4x4's and a guy on a 400ex and z400 a good run for there money with my 200x, you wanna see some pissed off guys, imagine getting beat to a 20 year old bike and half the cc's. I've beaten a bunch of quads on njorvp's old atv track, including yfz's and raptors, those guys were pissed. I can remember the one day where not ONE quad could keep up with me,it was great. Nobody said a word to me that day.

o yeah i love that stuff.we were trail riding at this guys house so of courese he made all the hills.when i showed up with my trike with 18" turf tamers the look i got was to die for.he just smirked and shook his head.then i proceeded to climb every hill with ease and make a few new ones for him.i don't think he was real happy with his quad.that thing has got a bigger balance on it then my 01 f150!!!thats crazy.it was alot of fun,and it is stil a very nice handling bike and well built, just not as fast as my 250r!!!!!!!

I raced a modded yfz before with my z and that thing was crazy fast for a 4 stroke. I think the stock yfz are pretty dam fast myself. The trx 450 has no chance against the yfz.

lol,,,,,, i hear you on this one!!! NO matter who you are there is someone faster around the corner just waiting!!!!!!!!! so you beat one yfz,,, oh that makes you the fastest ,,,,
pretty meaningless,,, i reciently raced 2 other yfz's on an uphill strip i won 2out of 2 so we switched machines and i won 2 out of 2 on a different quad ,,, so it comes down to RIDER ability i just knew the torque curve better than he did ,,, it turns out he was not shifting soon enough ,,
so he ended up being FASTER just learning more about his machine without spending a dime!!!

Thats an unfair comparison. He might of stumbled on the hole shot by a second or 2 and thats what gave you the few bike lentghs ahead.
Do a roll on side by side for a fair comparison. The monster torque should just blow yours away and remember, it's 80-90 percent rider and not the machine.
A 200s could beat a 250R if the guy gets a lousy holeshot and doesn't hook up. Thats a bit of a stretch but you get my point.

I have 2 buddies with yfzs, one bone stock and one with the cam mod and pipe and they seem to have a sudden surge of power in the mid range and then its over. That band where all the power is is extremely strong but very short and has to be taken advantage of to be fast. just thought i would say what i thought about them

My buddy has one. They are pretty bad ass. I'm just sick of the comments how they are so much better that a 450R, they are about equal. Some people need to quit reading dirt wheels. Anyone notice all the pages of Yamaha advertising in Dirt Wheels? I wonder which bike they are going to say is the best.
I'm not saying a 250R can't beat a YFZ but mine sure as hell won't. He puts about 5 bike lenghts on mine. Our 450's are neck and neck, win goes either way. I have a cam and he doesn't. The Yamaha is 11.9 to 1 comp and the Honda is only 10.5 to 1. I'm getting a 12 to 1 Weisco to equal out the compression, I should take him pretty good after that.

The YFZ is one of the best bikes out right now. But the TRX450R can easily keep up. Its all about the rider. The YFZ can be modded out cheaper and easier for more power than the TRX, but the TRX makes better and more effective power when done correctly. As far as Trikes vs. quads, sure what ever. A 250R should be on par with these bikes. Its anyones game. I do know for a fact though that my YFZ450 is faster than my ATC250R. Yes, I own both. And as far as Drag racing proving how fast you are.....It doesn't. It proves how fast your bike is. Do a real race with terrain changes like on an MX track or woods, or a longer stretch of sand dunes. I have yet to see anyone on a trike keep up with our riding group when we are out to race in the dunes or on an MX track. If you can keep up with your quad buddies on your trike then PROPs to you :)

There was a new TRX450R in the small group I was riding with at the dunes. I think the dude was either not used to it yet or was just an inexperienced rider or something. I don't know. I just never saw him really getting on it. Nice bike for sure though. That was the first time I ever got a really good look at one. I wouldn't kick it out of my garage. :D
And I've said it before but, if you really want to find out which BIKE is faster, not which rider is better, drag on pavement. Sand and dirt are skill surfaces. A monkey could race on pavement so it's all about the bike. No wheel spin to deal with. Just gotta keep the front end down.

The YFZ is all they claim it to be and then some. My nephew bought one about 6 months ago. If you have a perfect running 250R and you both race from a rolling start the R will more than hold it's own but from a dead start race the YFZ will kill an R. Now if you have a fully race ported 85/86R than you may have the upper hand but the toque that a piped, K&N filtered and rejeted YFZ produces is unbelievable, it takes off like a rocket and dosent quit pulling untill high up in the RPM range. My back and arms were literally aching after about 30 min. of riding, its more than a handful thats for sure. Now for the YFZ vs 450R debate, From my experiance of seeing YFZ'S and the 450R's in action (keep in mind i've only seen the 2 compete at dirt drags) The 450R is a very formidable opponent for the YFZ, seems like whom ever gets the holeshot wins the race. thats my story and im sticking to it. But still, IMO :TrikesOwn

Too my understanding the TRX450R is a more comfortable ride, I also heard it was geared higher making it faster than the YFZ. I would take the TRX over the yfz any day.

It is nice to see some non bias comparasions. I hate how dirtwheels says that the 450r doesn't even compare. I read that stuff over and over and it makes me question what I would buy. I now know that I would get the Honda.

look this is the bottom line.
the guy i rode with is an experinced rider of 8+ years,no beginner.he can hold his own.his yfz has a pipe silencer combo and it an 04.this bike is no slouch it has sack!!!
but to me dirt wheels made it seem to be the holy grail.to which it is not.i have raced against these things both in a hare scramble, and indoor mx.indoors they have the upper hand, and at the har scramble it was muddy and or frozen so it's hard to judge them there.my point was simple to state that i dragged one in a bean stubble feild from a dead stop and at no point in time did it have a chance.out of 10 times running them, not once did i lose.am i best rider to grace the seat of my 250r?,i would like to think so,jk.again this is simply one man stating the facts to what went down.even when he rode the r he said it was 1 fast machine.
now there is always the possiblilty he didn't break the motor in properly,or he's got a lemon.IDK,but the 1 yfz i rode was not impressive at all.my r has a few mods but nothing extrodinary.it runs well, and to my knowledge will hang with the 450r i ride with, and smoke the yfz i ride with.i'm sure at TF05 there will be some much anticipated drags that will settle disputes like these.

I've beat many yfz 450's ( stock and modded) all with very experienced riders, raptors are no match either. if they pull the holeshot on me because I cant keep the front end down I can usually catch them by 5th gear. I dont stand a chance on a motocross style track though. As a matter of fact I dont think I've ever lost a drag race, not that I have the fastest machine in hte world, but I do around here!

This is what happen when people try to judge a machine strictly by its ability to accelerate on the freeway. I rode a stock YFZ450. I was expecting a lot more than what I got for acceleration, because I felt it was extremely over hyped, and I was expecting a lot more. Slow? Hardly! The YFZ's were taking the holeshots at the tracks, and toasting my TRX250R, but nothing that left me in awe. My Quad-Z does a better job of hanging with them when the gate drops, but they still have the edge. The point everybody seems to be missing here is that its the entire rest of the track on which the YFZ450 is far superior. The stock suspension was too stiff for my weight, but I still couldnt hit the whoops hard enough to find real discomfort. Turning was effortless. I simply cranked the bars sideways and throttled it, and didnt even need to lean. Its practically turned by itself. I was able to land jumps with ease and comfort from greater height and at greater speeds.
If you buy a YFZ450 to go straight line street racing you will be disappointed. If you are actually going to ride it for what it was meant for, your going to get probably one of the best, if not THE best and most competitive stock quad ever put on the market. Its probably the first machine in ten years that you could buy, and take to the MX track and be competitive without adding hundreds of dollars worth of modifications. People can talk all the trash they want about how bad trikes are, but if you want to go to a REAL race, and run a YFZ450 on a REAL track, a YFZ quad rider with half your skill will clean your clock no matter what trike you are on.

Those are FIGHTIN' WORDS! :w00t:
I agree with you 100%. This same debate raged for weeks over @ .ORG
I personally have ridden a few of BOTH the Honda & the Yamaha. I have also drag raced against both. (Raptors too) My Tecate in stock trim will not beat a stock 450 or a Piped/modded Raptor. It is very close, but it just isn't going to happen. I may be able to beat them if I get a good launch and they bobble a bit, but to me, that really is just a fluke. In a clean run, a win is a win, and a bad start is just a reason to run them off again.
BTW, Derrick, the carbs are in, I am goin to pick them up tomorrow after work and I will get it shipped out Saturday. I also just picked up my new cylinder from the engine shop....there is lots of metal shavings on my workbench and less material inside the cylinder! :naughty:
