Well finally got the motor put back together and running. The trike runs real hard. It suprised me how well it runs. it was worth the time money an effort. Here is what I did to the motor. All new bearings and gaskets, had ftz racing port and bore the cylinder. Put a new Weisco piston in it. Also had FTZ racing shave the head ( it is a bear to pull the recoill starter rope now). Also had them put a new rod on the crank. New clutch basket, new clutch disks and plates, and new boysen power reeds. The trike also has a bassani exhaust and I took off the air box and put on a foam air filter. Also has a pro tec suspension, and wheel spacers. I want to share a tech tip if you ever mess with the clutch on a 175 or 125. I ordered the new metal clutch plates from yamaha put the motor back together and started the trike tried to make it go and the clutch slipped bad. Tried readjusting the clutch same thing. I thought i put it together wrong and tore the cluth basket off checked everything and put it back together and it still slipped. Well by this time I was loosing my mind. Well I had the old disks and plates laying next to the new ones and I noticed they where the same height. The new ones also had the metal spacer with them so it should have been taller then th old plates. I find a 175 yamaha manual and guess what there is a + and - clearence on your clutch. You have to take a micrometer and measure the cluth plates because there are like 3 different widths. You have to combine the different widths plates to get into the factory specs. Well yamaha only shows one part number for the clutch plates and all the new plates the sent me where all the smallest width you can get there fore that is why it slipped. It drove me nuts trying to figure that out. I know some of you guys are experienced mechanics and are probably laughing at me but I am self taught and that was a hard lesson to figure out. Well Thats all for now Glenn

Wow you have put a lot of work into that. Have you raced or ridden with anyone to compare power? Do all 175s have rear disc brakes? That thing looks great. You should put some holeshots on it.

I noticed one at a local motorcycle junk yard last weekend, I was thinking of picking up but it needed alot of work. there a good looking trike.

Man that's Own a trip, looks just like the one I had as a kid and it also has the same Bassani pipe and it looks as good as mine did 20years ago. Man I loved that little trike. I think you have done a great job on that 175, cant be many left that looks as good as yours. :TrikesOwn

Nice restore, is see you mix your oil and took out the oil p/p. Also doesn't that bike come without rear suspension? Another question is how does it compare to other trikes for power and speed against four strokes in particular?

The 175 tri moto did not come with a suspension it was originally a hard tail. I do mix my oil and do not use the pump. My exchange student weighs 145lbs. and he raced a honda 250 ex 4 wheeler and smoked him. Before I rebuilt the engine he raced a yamaha blaster and took him off the start and then the blaster caught up and passed him. I was wondering if the tires you guys where mentioning would fit on the stock yamaha rims I . I am not opposed to getting rid of the ballon tires. Also what would you put up front?.Thanks Glenn Oister

Man I would love to get ahold of one of those supension kits. Would anyone be interested in takeing a large number of very very detailed pictures and measurements so maybe I could reproduce the swing arm?

I have 2 of those kits, one is on my 175, which, I might add was the first one to appear on this site, about 3 or 4 years ago. Glens was originally found by smokinwrench, a cool trike for sure. The kit was made by Pro-Tec, and consists of a cast aluminum swingarm, a shock and aluminum mounting plate. It also came with a brake caliper relocation bracket. To use the kit, you have to sacrifice your airbox and run a clamp on. A K&N was included in the kit. Mobular sent me scans of advertisements and also a Dirt wheels article of a 175 build up using that kit and a bunch of other mods. Glen, I would keep the front tire and use 18" turf tamers out back.

Will the 18" turf tamers fit the stock rims? I would be willing to get you pictures and measurments if you are interested let me know what you want. Glenn Oister

yah, you just have to order the right size tire, any tire with the right rim size for your rim will fit, it looks like its an 8 inch rim so order 18 by (w/e width you want) by 8 so if it was 10 inches wide youd want a 18x10x8 tire, turf tamers are a real good choice
