my tire size is 22x12x9, my question is can i get a taller tire, say a 24x12x9 to fit on the 12x9 rim or does it have to be 22?? does the 22 matter in getting a new tire to fit the rim, or is it just tire height??

also will it help provide suspension for riding?

The 22 is the tire height.
The 12" is the wheel diameter.
The 9" is the wheel width.
You can go as tall as you want so long as it fits a 12" dia. rim and 9" width.

Check with the tire manufacturer just to make sure they recommend your particular rim width with the tire you're looking at.

If it's a mega-ply heavy duty tire, it'll ride rough with a hard sidewall.
If it's a softer sidewall (less durable) tire, it'll be sweeeeet.

My old Polaris Explorer had TALL and wide stock tires and they rode GREAT.
That thing was like riding a couch through the trails. :)

You got the diameter and width backwards.... the last number is the diameter. Make sure your height difference wont interfere with steering or your rear fenders! The rear tires on my Yamahauler are 25x13x9... seems like just the inch wider than stock made them taller too, and I have a hard time getting the fenders on and off it.

I thought he was talking about a utility quad wheel?
They're 12" diameter if I'm not mistaken.

Is there such thing as a 9" dia. wheel with a 12" width?
That'd be a beast! :D
I'm picturing the baddest Holeshot width footprint in the universe! :beer

22 is the the diameter of the tire
12 is the width of the tire
9 is the diameter of the rim

I have 22x12x8 on my 250sx . I don't know if you can get a 24 inch tire but there are 25 inch tires out there that will work on the rims. A bigger tire like that might rub on fenders and it will decrease your aceleration. I would stick with the 22 inch tire if it was my trike. Let us know what you do.

yeah, its just trying to find a good mud tire that will give some good suspension as well, my knobbys do great, but too much road riding wore them down.

If your going to be buying tires soon, I would reccomend www.rockymountainatv.com cheapest place I have seen

I've also heard Rocky Mountain ATV is fast and inexpensive.

Not too many ATV tires fare well on asphalt anyway.
You can replace a couple (or more) knobbies for the price of some higher-end tires.

Sorry about the confusion on the tire/wheel sizing.
I didn't realize what machine we were talking about.
Heck, our beloved Big Red's came with 25" tall tires. :)

You'll be changing your gearing to a taller ratio too. Depending on your type of riding that may be good, it may be bad.

You'll lose some low end grunt, how much I couldn't say.

Ahuh.... 25 12x9 was standard on.....

80-83 ATC185, ATC200 81-83, 82-87 Big Reds, YTM200E 83-84, and the YTM200ERN 85 oh.. and the KLT250A 82-83.

Those would be the 3 wheeled applications... from page 736, ATV Spec Chart in Dennis Kirk..

Or as we like to call, the height... I've never refered to this as diameter before, cause normally when you are talking tires, the diameter refers to the inside "hole" for the rim. The other is the height, so you don't have to refer to inside diameter and outside diameter.

Be aware of PIPE clearance.......

My big red had carlisle(sp)'s on it and it rubbed the exhaust bad.

my SX now has 22x12x8's and they also rub the pipe a tad.... got the shock on the lowest setting for my weight..
