sold my sx yesterday to chrisg and when i delivered it we went for a short ride. i got to ride my first hardtail (honda 200 something) and it sucked!!!!!! it actually wasn't as bad as i thought it would be but man what a bouncer. of course we were on rocky bumpy trails too. does anyone here ever go on long rides on hardtails?

lol i ride all over hell and back on mine, once you get used to it its ok, you kind of get a science down to it, its called lifting thy arse off the seat when you notice a bump in the trail. id like to find a suspended machine this summer though.

Some of us old guys grew up on the old ATC's with no suspension and only balloon tires. Come to think of it, shocks and forks weren't even invented yet and we didn't have TV's either, just radios. Man, we've come a long way, you young punks don't know how good you've got it. :beer

I did two "Rumble on the Ridge" rallys, 33 miles each on my ALT125.

Long ride on a hard tail? Absolutely. Went for a 3 hr ridde yesterday on my ytm 200. That one is extra hard because of the 4 ply mud tires. :naughty: That's why I really like my 2 ply knobby balloon tires on my 200s. They soften things up a bit.

i used to go for 4-5hour+ rides on the 185 when i had it with 6ply mudlites, now that was a rough ride especially in the winter months when the grounds solid.....

The longest day I ever had on a hardtail was 12 hours on my 185s in the sand at the Oregon dunes. This was back in the early 80's and it was all I had. After collecting several suspended trikes, it just never got used, so I finally had to let it go.

my favorite is independent suspension like on polaris's, most comfortable ride you can get. i love suspension, hardtails are wicked hard on my back.

Now that i'm used to the SX's height i don't think i'd want to ever go back.

but it was a weird change from my 84 Big Red... Hard tails are ok if you like putting along.. but keeping up with the 500 + carts in rough trails is a workout !!!

I only ride a hardtail trike; you just don't jump too high and when you see a bumpy stretch brace for impact and hold on

I got used to the hard tail but i was always worried in the back of my mind that i was gonna break the frame from my fat arse beating around the seat through the bumps..

i ride mine to hell and back 82 200 no front susp either, 12 hour days not a problem, hell i even jump it, but last time i did that i bent my axel, i have no problem's keeping up with suspended quads around hear through trails, if it gets really bumpy like whoops or something just bend the knees and pin it man! balls to the wall.

Until about 3 years ago when I got my SX, all I had ever ridden or owned were hard tails....
Man that first ride on the SX was like, like discovering hot water! :Bounce

Man, I'm an old guy with a sore back all the time and bad arthritis in my hands and arms, but I drive a 185.
Never go out for less than many, many hours at a time. An average ride for me is between eight and ten hours.
I've even gone on rides that last several days.
Yeah, when I'm done I'm pretty crippled up and even had to visit the doctor a few times. (Let's have a big hand for the inventor of the drug Naproxene!)
But it's what I got for a ride so I can ride it or stay home.
I've never ridden a suspended trike yet, so I don't know what I"m missing. I'm sure it'd be a lot better than my machine, but there ya go.

I have ridden quads with IRS and they scare me when tackling tippy terrain. Give me a straight axle any time. But that's just mho.

it depends on the type of riding you do. if you jump and ride rough terrain, you need rear suspension. but if you are just ridin down dirt roads or doing easy farmwork, there is no sense in wasting money on a trike with it

Man that sounds like fun!

I'm not sure I ever had a trike that would make it 102 miles without a toolbox or a tow rope.

how hard would it be to make a hardtail into a suspended trike?

mikey's250sx
05-10-2005, 06:28 PM
i believe they made kits to do that but why? i am guessing it would be cheaper to sell a hardtail and buy a suspended trike.

From what i have seen it isnt too hard to make a hardtail 200 into rear susp..in fact i intend on tackling that after i get the tri-z and other projects out of the way

thats what im thinking of doing with my 122. either make a new tube frame or just re-work the back end.
