Well, I havent been here in a while, but plan on getting a 1992 kx80 with a 1987 engine. I was wondering what you people think of this bike. I know its got a DG silencer, stock pipe, and a fresh rebuild. I am trading my gokart for it because i want a bike. Is this a good first bike? I have never ridden a 2 stroke bike before, only a XR100, so I need to know if I am going too big for a beginner? I am 5 7 120lbs, and have just a tad of expirencce. Is this a good bike for the cost (under 500.00)

Okay I got the 80, and it runs good, but i have a slight shifting problem. With the shift lever, when you click it down, it stays down, when you click up, it stays up. I dont know what the problem is and I dont want to go putting a ton of money into it for people to split the cases and whatnot. I am no bike mechanic right now, so I dont want to tear it apart, no knowing what I am doing. The clutch slips aswell, so i plan on buying replacement plates for it. Anyone know what could be wrong with the shifing? I kindof want help soon because next weekend we have riding plans.. Any help is appreciated.
the shifting problem would be this spring in the picture below,
its the shift return spring i think they call it, your local kawi dealer should more than likely have one or be able to get you one, i pulled the image from bikebandit.com but the parts numbers are to bluury to read in the pics.

Okay. So all I would need to do is pull the basket off and put one in, or do I still need to split the cases? I have heard that maybe the shifting forks were sticking, but if that were the case, than it would only be in a few gears, correct?
yea you just gota pop the clutch cover off and you might have to take the basket off, sometimes you dont have too.easy stuff ;)

but that will solve the shifing problem? if so than i am going to get a clutch for it too, just because the old one slips.
im 99% shure that is your problem. the spring has either broken, or wasnt installd properly.....change your gear oil see if it has any silver shavings in it, that will tell you pretty quick weather it broke or not..

yeah I do have another question. 1. If that is indeed the problem, if i have to wait for the spring to come in, can I ride it lightly with the spring like that?? and what kind of oil do I need to run in it gear wise??
10w30 or 10w40 motor oil for gear box oil, as for riding it like that as long as the spring and jigglin around and broke in there it cant hurt it, just a pain in the but lol

well i havea friend coming over tomarrow to look at it, but i might get really anxious, because i havent really ridden it yet, so i might get some 10w40 and try it out for a little bit.

Well I have been riding it for a little bit but i have found another problem. I have a small leak in the clutch cover because the gasket wasnt sealed properly, and I noticed that after i put fresh oil in it, when it leaked it was kind of watery. Was this because it was all warmed up, or do I have a problem with the water pump. I need help asap, as I plan on placing my order with DK soon, so please help.

Could it be a bad water pump gasket???

Water and oil don't mix, ever look at Italian salad dressing? Its water or thin because it is warm or has gas in it. Wipe some up with your finger and smell it, you'll be able to tell which it is. Did you get your spring fixed?
if it was a waterpump gasket yout oil would be nice and cruddy white, its just cause the oil is warmed up it becomes more viscose.

ill tighten the clutch cover, and ill see what happens from there with new oil. I am going to replace the water pump gasket anyway, because the kid i got it from says "I had a new one but I dont know what happened to it".. Jeez..

well I tightened the cover down and man some of em were so loose.. it still drips a bit but not as much as it had before. Also one of the waterpump bolts was too shore which made it vibrate out easier, so i put a longer bolt in there and its working good. I keep fouling plugs, like a plug a day, so I am switching to 40:1 instead of 32:1. see what happens.. We might go to a nice riding area sunday, but i dont know yet. If so Ill bring the cam for some pics. well either way ill get pics for all you guys!

if the waterpump gasket was leaking it wouldn't go it the oil it would be leaking on the outside of the case. check your coolant if its low i bet you its the waterpump seals have.
