the one thing i didn't replace upon my engine rebuild was the cam chain. i'm pretty sure that is what is making the ticking noise when i start it up. it's pretty loud. what is the worst case scenario of a stretched out cam chain?

skip time, break, ware your timing sprockets out then your screwed and you have to buy new lower and upper timing sprokets and a new chain, which should be replaced anyways when you put a new chain or sproket in.

yea if it is too loose it will jump time, and kill your sprocket.

sorry to hijack your post, but i also didnt put a new timing chain in and was just wondering if you can do it without removing the side case.

If it skips time enough the valve(s) could hit the piston and destroy the valves at least & possibly more. I to learned the hard way during rebuild and will never do it again without replacing the chain. I bent two valves before I figured out why it kept skipping time on me. Another life leason of hard knocks for me.

Hey Jenn, lets see those pics. Maybe it will give some incouragement for some people to change their cam chain. So that though don't wreck the new valves etc that they just paid for....

I cannot find my c-shaped sprocket I pulled off the crank, but the teeth were litterly c shaped. The topsprocket faired better. Now I will show you picts of the fine metal. The one is of my parts washer, one of the lid of the passage, for collecting metal (it was doing its job) and one pict of where some of the metal came from. Now with this pay very close attention to how fine the metal is. Do you truley believe, that all this went where it belonged, or, did it float around your engine. Mine is with chain still attached to its sprockets. LOOSE CHAINS RUB! Then you get the added valve issue, mine had a bad intake. Depending on trike, you need to remove altenator to access your chain. Shouldnt need to split at all.

When i rebuilt my motor the first time when i got it the people who owned it before me didnt tighten the cam chain and it wore a groove in the cylinder where the chain goes. I just smoothed it out and fixed it.
