heres the deal. I've been through hell and back trying to get this bike running (tranny problems) and i ended up putting a different bottom end in this thing. The new problem is that the bike doesn't roll freely. Nothing bins or grabs, it just rolls reaaly stiff. When i back off the gas and go to shift something whines, sound like it's coming from the drive shaft area. Not sure if i got the little split ring in the right spot or what. Any suggestions? By the way, i bought this machine for $200 with, i was told, a bent shifting fork. New tranny parts, different cases to replace the original broken ones, finally a whole other bottom end and countless hours later frustration is really setting in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well... I feel your pain... I've owned these 3 Yamaha TriMoto's for going on a a year and a ½ .. I buy more parts, fix something... buy more parts, fix something (repeat the pattern) I haven't had much luck in getting ANY of them to run.
On the other hand, my 3 Honda's have never let me down, even riding all weekend at Trikefest with no oil to the head!. Ride Red!

that maybe true, but i still need suggestions on what's wrong with this thing. Heres some more info: when the motor was off the bike the bike rolled fine. When the motor was off the bike you could spin the drive gear on the motor just fine. Everything was smooth untill i put the motor on the bike and hooked up the drive shaft. Does any one know exactly where that half ring goes on the bearing end of the shaft under the cover on the motor? The clymer manual does not get into this part of the bike at all.

Still having problems with this trike? Looks like in the diagrams on that output shaft the order is bearing, 3 shims, then middle gear and shaft. This is from the Yamaha diagram. These can be found at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx find your machine and it's under the middle drive section.

All of those scematics are also available here on the 3wheelerworld.com homepage. I gave a copy of all the Yami trikes and the 85-86R and 350X to Billy at Trikefest last year.
