go to a hardware store, ask for pull start rope, they should have a bulk roll and just get 5 or so feet. They might even have differant thicknesses
get some nylon rope from the hardware store.

any good rope will work as long as its braided, braided is tough, and has low stretch. just dont get it too small in diameter.

Hit the local lawn mower repair shop, and buy the appropriate size there.

if your rope breaks after 3 or 4 pulls.. you need to follow it's path and sand/grind down some sharp spots.... something is cutting into it.

if its breaking that fast, there is a sharp edge, probably where the rope goes through the housing, just file it down, or dremel it.
doh! someone beat me to it.....

Try putting a piece of aircraft cable. I had it in my bike for a bit but it started to fray from rubbing against a sharp edge. Its really strong though. just use the metal crimp things where you would usually tie a knot

i cant see metal as being good for the inside of the pull start assembly, it could mess things up later on
