my chain keeps rattling on my chain gaurd and its bugging me, would it hurt anything to run without the chain gaurd?? im thinking if the chain ever came off with the gaurd on it would be a pain in the arse to try and put back on.. i know i risk sticks and rocks, but what do you guys think?

I would reccommend that you NEVER run without your chain gaurd. But if you are still using your case saver thats not so bad. That little piece of equipment will save you a lot of aggravation and money. If you run without those pieces you risk your chain breaking your side case , and possibly damaging internal parts. So ultimately its your decision ,a $20-$40 case saver /chain gaurd or unknown $$$$$hundreds for a side case etc etc etc. GREG

If its a 250R you will risk damaging your shift shaft housing if the chain fyls off and wads up in your case. If its a Tecate they are just plastic anyway and do nothing to protect your case.

wht exactly is a case saver, does it go behind the chain? protect your crankcase or something?

i thank you folks for the responses, i just wanted to know if it vould mess something up, i will probably end up taking the chain gaurd off and rebending it and replacing the gasket.

Exactly. I think it's a good investment. beats the hell out of replacing an engine case if you throw your chain.

if your talking hard tail trikes, it is usaully not worth it to run it. after the gasket wears it starts to trap dirt and stuff you dont want near your chain.

i ain't sure if reference is to the chain guard or you all are talking about the rear skidplate.
if it is about the chain guard ,,, my avatar picture should say it all.
those 2 finger tips in the bottle would still be on my left hand if a chain guard had been in place.

Always wonderd wtf that was!, anyway your chain shouldnt be rattlin agaist your guard, the only reason it would is its real loose or your axel is bent....i like to run with mine on to keep the rocks/sticks out in tight places...

well i dont know where R's come into the equation as oldshell has a 200s which have completely different chain gaurds to the rear suspended models.

Holy ***** man... I WILL remember not to put my finders near the chain or sprocket. I seen that threat was about a 200x. This original thread by oldshell is about a 200s correct? which is almost the same setup. I think some people are thinking about the large chainguards that come on I think like a 110 or 125. Aren't those the one that cover the whole chain front to back? I could be wrong though.

yeah its a hard tail, and it completely encases the chain, so you cannot get at it without removal of the tire.. the chain is rattling against it because the gaurd got bent. and the gasket is ripped out of it so its useless.

i had a ytm 200 that had that same thing with the chain incased. i took the whole thing off, just makes it harder to do maintenance on the chain. its there to keep your fingers and feet out. and they thought it would keep the dirt and water off the chain which would make it last longer.
wow i don't belive that many people have had there fingers cut off in front sprockets!! i wouldn't even put mine near them while the bike is running.

i took the one off my 110, alot of people take them off because they holed water and mud on the chain.
