I just recently aquired a 86 Tecate. What is the best mod you guys have done to your bike and what recommendations would you make for sand racing and all out fun in the sun.

Personally?
I think you need to resist modding it and sell that '86 to me. :D
In all seriousness, tread lightly on modding that '86....they are a rare breed.
How about posting some pics?
I'd say the "usual" 2 stroke mods should do the trick: pipe, silencer, filter and jetting, just don't throw away the original parts that you remove!!! i.e. pipe, silencer, airbox components, etc..
You lucky dog.....got an '86. :beer

About 17 Hp????? I figure 60 will quench my thirst for now. Also as for pics she is in sad shape. Give me a month to get new plastics and I will post some before and after pics. Has been in storage for 15 years. Needs a few things but I figure for 500 bucks it was well worth the money I spent. :Bounce :D :naughty:

$500? You can't go wrong there.
You made out like a bandit on that one.
Well worth it is right!
By all means, post the before and after shots.
Those are always cool to see.
Hornetpowersports has some AWESOME radiator shrouds and headlight plastic reproductions. :beer
They are a heck of a lot cheaper than the OEM/Ebay route!

You can still get a tank cover for your T3, so keep that in mind when your buying new plastic. I just got one a month ago, $49.99 from ceet.
Mods- basically the same as any other sport trike. My T3 is an old racer so the airbox is modified, uni filter, unknown pipe, major port work, and it still runs pretty good with the stock carb. I have a 40mm flatslide that was the carb it raced with, but it needs rebuilding and i think it might be a bit much for the kind of riding i do.
So, if i were you, i'd start looking for a pipe and silencer if you still have a stocker, buy a Uni filter (a guy sells them on ebay for $2 w/ $10 shipping, saves a couple bucks), and maybe think about modifying your airbox or just the lid. If you want to get into the engine, get it ported. remember to re-jet after any mods though, don't want to ruin the nicasil bore.

Throw the stock T-3 stator and flywheel in the trash and install the KXT 250 (dirt bike) stator and fly wheel. You will have nothing but problems with the stock 3 wheeler unit. Then I would install a K&N air filter, carbon fiber reeds and an after market pipe, she will rip with these mods, trust me.
Now I know of 3 86 KXTS in the DFW area. Mine, your's and a fellow who goes by tmecars on here. tmecars also has a Tiger (among several other nice trikes), only one I've ever seen in person. We should plan a ride to Red-River, Little Sahara or somewhere!
Mines pretty much all stock and in need of TLC as far as the top-end goes. It's down on the monster power it used to have.
I think TriZTunes gave you the best advice. Talk to Corey Sprock at Sprock Racing.
Hornethorsepower's shroud and light cover are great. I'd like to get a set myself. Chaplin Kawasaki sells new front and rear fenders on ebay. You may be able to still get the front, rear and left shroud from Kawasaki. yamatopdog on ebay has a great decal kit.
Great to hear of another north texas tecate! Keep in touch! :beer

Could you possibly post a pic of it installed on your T-3? I was interested in buying one, but never saw one mounted before. Just wondering how they fit and look.

Are you talking about the tank cover? Mines still in the bag, but ask Scottzj or scottyj, can't remember his exact screenname, but he had one with a cover. His said tecate on it, which is cool cause all the other ones i've seen said kawasaki. But, ceet wont put anything on them now, you have to stick with plain green

For the sand get a good mid range port job, and if you can find one a good quality pipe. Also possibly a gearing change. If you want a all out duner bike I would...
- Mid to top end power porting job
- Lightend Flywheel
- Shave the head to boost compression
- Get your piston windowed
- Balance the crank/rod/piston
- Run a 36mm carb
- Try to find a qualitity pipe for the beast
- V-force 2 reeds and reed cage
- Elminate the airbox and run a K&N Filter with the outerwears
- High performance clutch
