My neigbor stopped by with a 1987 CR500R last night, he was just testing it out. It's in really nice shape, just a small tear in the seat. Has a new FMF pipe, new .060 over piston, new chain and sprockets and tires. The seller is asking $1500, I think that's a bit high. He is going to offer him $1200 which may still be high but an ok deal I think. The one thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have the inverted forks. It runs great, a real ripper for sure. It's the 2nd CR500R I've ridden, the other was a 1991. Another one of my buddy's has a CRF450R. I'm sure we'll line em up sooner or later. Obviously the CR puts out more power but it's a job to keep the front end down.

What do you guys think of the 87's? Seems like a decent bike. Just looking to get some feed back for him.

Tell me about it. This guy can ride and he is crazy too! I couldn't believe the stuff he was doing on a YZ250. He was riding 5th gear wheelies on this 500 till he was out of sight. And this is on the first day he has ridden a 500, insane.

We took a stock Cr500, ported polish, bigger carb reeds pipe ect, THEN shoe hornd it into a 98 Cr250 alum frame......top gear down the straight away over 90mph and it still wants to pull the front end up pinned....just keeps pullin n pullin, this is on a roadtrack bike is set up for super motard...., its freakin insanly fast.....and we could port it more..........lol just to give you and idea of the power.....68 stock we gota be pushing over 75-80.....on pump gas!!!

^^^ things sound nutty! Just the way I like it!
Definatly gonna get one down the raod. It stinks how on a bike you can't extend the swingarm like on a trike or quad, I'm not saying you CAN'T do it on a bike, it just messes the controls up...

Why can't you extend the swinger on a bike 250R'en?

^^^ you can, but not like a trike or quad... try turing a dirtbike with a + 5in swingf arm on it...... feels like turning a bus

That's what service honda does to create the cr500af these days. They aren't in production but can still be special ordered. Actually, the new '05 trx250r is a by-product of the cr500af. The aluminum frames are "stolen" from the cr250 and service honda was left with a bunch of NEW cr250 motors...so they started making the trx250r using the cr250 motor and a new 400ex frame. It's been a while since I messed with a cr500 but I have some seat time on a '97? kx500. They can be decent trail bikes (believe it or not) but require a little more work than a true woods bike. The big 450s actually make similar power (in hp and delivery) to the open class bikes. I don't have any experience with the '87 in particular but the few friends I have who ride 500s swear by them

^^^ I'm pretty sure they make some changes to the CR250 motor before they put it in the TRX. Obviously the engine needs to be geared way differnt because it's pushing a quad around not just a bike. And I think they increase the radiator size too, because when the engine pushes the quad around it requires more power from the engine, so more cooling is necasary.
Other than that cool info man! Service honda rocks! Now they just need to make ATC's!!!

Nope, the engine is a stocker...not sure about the rad though. The kickstart is reversed and that's it. They've been using ONLY the 2001 cr250 motor so far because it's power delivery suits the quad...all of the tests say that it's WAY too hot for anyone but the best racers

^^^ really? I just don't get how gearing for a lightweight bike could possibly suite a "heavy" quad frame. I know back when honda took the 250r from the ATC and put it in the quad they ahd to change the gearing and enlarge the radiator by 15%. So if they had to do those thing for a trike to quad transition, I'd imagine they'd have to do even more for a bike to quad transition., right?

gearing has nothing to do with the motor. The '05 trx250r weighs 320lbs...it also comes stock with fmf torque (maybe a gnarly) pipe...rear wheel horsepower is 47. The 2001 cr250 produces plenty of midrange

I would jump on a CR500 in a second------if I had the grapefruit-sized balls needed to ride one to its fullest! My 250R is probably at around 50 HP and is all I can handle at the moment! Get some basic mods on the CR500 and over 70 HP at the crank is possible, but only a priveledged few can control it!

The price is right I would say if the bike is healthy. It's funny, thinking how you could easily pay $4000-$5000 for a highly used quad that is about 1/2 as fast as that CR500! Old or not, they rock!
