I have gray liquid dripping out of my tri-z engine. its coming out of where the clutch lever goes in to the case. and its also coming out of the rubber tube that connects to the motor by the clutch lever .

how do you check the oil level in the transmisson and what kind of oil should i use?

There is an oil check screw on the left side of the case, just unscrew it and put 10w-30 oil in through the top filler. when it starts coming out of where you took the check screw out, put that screw back in and put the top filler plug in too.
The grey stuff might be really old oil that has thinned out. When was your last oil change? You should probaly do an oil change before anything, and put in some fresh oil.

you bet, 10-30 will work. Make sure you do an oil change though.
I dont know why the grey stuff would be leaking out, just keep an eye on that as well as your oil level.

grey stuff hmmm.... might have a coolant leak, or blown a base gasket, cause it shouldnt be grey... might want to check that out

are there water jackets going through the base gasket?

The grey substance you speak of is most likely oil contaminated with water/ antifreeze. Change your oil and check your coolant level. Run it for a while after putting in fresh oil. What does it look like? Where is your coolant level? Is the oil "milky" looking? Let us know ....greg

Ill bet your base gasket is bad. Your oil and antifreez are mixing togeather. Bummer dude

i went to drain the oil and it was mostly coolant that drained out.

so i guess i need to know what are the possible ways that that much coolant could get in there and go down the list and and check them out.

how about the oil seal inside the water pump?
and the base gasket?
any other ways?

it looks like i will have to pull the engine to get the cylinder out.

WHOA!!!! Don't pull the engine!!! 99% chance that it is your water pump seal. This is very common on the Tri-Z. You'll have to pull your kicker gear assembly, side cover and water pump housing. There is a $10 seal in there that keeps the water out of the trans. Change it! Also, check for shaft wear on the impeller shaft.

This seal is the same as a Banshee so it's no problem to get one. Lastly, make sure to pull the kicker assembly off before the side case, because there is a hidden bolt behind there.

You need a waterpump seal. You can get them from the yamaha dealer or www.bikebandit.com

Use a gasket. You should be able to get one from Yamaha or an aftermarket gasket company like Vesrah.

I don't recomend Versah, get OEM. I had Versah and they leak like crazy. Some other people have also had troubles with their gaskets.

There is no way coolant can get into your bottom end through the base gasket, or the head gasket for that matter. The base gasket is a vacuum seal, with no coolant running through it, and will mostly suck air if it leaks, with some pressure on the downstroke. If the head gasket leaks, coolant can go into the cylinder, mostly out the exhaust with huge amounst of steam, and possibly accumulate in the crank, but it cannot get into the gearbox from there. Usually a leaking head gasket causes problems in teh other direction, with cylinder pressure, pressurizing the cooling system and blowing coolant out the overflow.

Read Derricks post. My guess is youll probably also find that the impeller has separated from the shaft and needs replaced as well as the seal.
