Ok. So there is my SX. The rims are starting to rust around the outside and I want to paint them. I am stuck in deciding what color. The choices are keep it silver, go with gold, or make them black. What do you guys think??

i used that rustoleum silver hammered paint on mine, and it holds up great. Id say keep it stock color, due to the condition the bike is in.

I agree with DeePa, kep that nice bike in stock condition.

Eh.. if I paint them a different color, I think that would attract buyers if I ever went to sell it.. because it would be "unique"..

well then why did you ask?

Well no.. I guess I didnt exactly state my question in the last post. Would having gold or black rims rather than silver down the selling cost or would it probly stay the same?

id go with the silver wheel paint from parts store.

Dupli-Color High performance wheel paint. Thats what I use fairly often and it works great. there are a few different colors to choose from. I would stick with the silver though, to me its seems like anything else would look out of place.

I dont like when people paint the rims gold, like on Tri-Z's and 250R's. They only look good if their anodized, and you can't anodize steel. So I say paint them silver/grey.

Black or gold wouldnt go with the rest of the bike.

Fresh coat of silver in my opinion.

What's up with the pipe tip ? was it rusted out ?

the rest of the bike looks great.. motor is very clean. someone altered the side cover on the tranny.. the top part being silver is not usual.

Yeah.. it was rusted out so I riveted some metal to it until I get my new pipe. Its just temporary.
And I am the one that altered the cover on the tranny.. it looked horrible because the paint was starting to rub off because thats where the heel of your foot hit. So I took some steel wool, took off the paint, and shined it up with some Mothers Metal Polish.. and I personally think it looks good. lol.. you guys might not.. but I like it, and it definately looks alot better than what it did.

Paint em gold! Go for it! They look great gold! :beer

I got a great paint for you to use also so you don't have to shop around for the right color.

I saw those pics the other day.. you used Dupli-Color wheel paint, right?
Can I see a pic of those on your SX? (I believe those are from your SX??)

Yep. Look again, I was in the process of posting it while you asked.

I can put the tank, fender on tomorrow if you like, for you to get a better picture if your interested.

The pic with the paint can........that wheel is NOT painted with that gold. Thats actually a "greener" gold that's on that wheel. The gold in can is much nicer I think.

Ok.. thanks. I do like that color on the SX.. I didn't know if it would look too great.. but I like it. I think I have decided on a color, now please give me instructions on getting the tire on and off.. lol.

You don't have to take the tire off to paint the wheel. In fact your better off not too!

1st just tape around the rim overlapping on to the tire all the way around. Now carefully go around the edge of rim and cut the tape precisly at edge of rim.

Now take a full size garbage bag and put tire into it. Cut about 2 inches away from rim in a circle and tape that up also. Now your set.

The whole ordeal takes abot 10 minutes or so.

Do the sanding 1st though.

Could I sand blast it without hurting the tire then?

I would think it wouldn't do a thing to the tire but don't qoute me on that. You could always tape it up 1st like I showed but use heavy duty duct tape instead of masking tape.

If you are doing the blasting just test a spot on the tire or a junk tire if ya have one laying around. I'm almost positive it would not harm it what so ever.

Where are you from in PA ? I'm in Slatington PA, about 70 miles N of Philadelphia, 15 N of Allentown.

sandblasting wont hurt the tire, i did them before like that i didnt even tape anything off.

My dad tells me that you have to put primer on the metal before you can paint it.. I didn't this this was true, but he tells me that you have to.. I don't have to, do I?

And I'm from Brookville.. thats between Dubois and Clarion, and near Punxsutawney..

you don't " Have " to.. but it would help it adhere better.. no big deal on rims as it's easy enough to re-do once in a while... it's not custom car job ya know !

oh.. and about the tires.. they are BearClaws 22. 12. 8(or 9 not sure ) but get 11's not 12's.. as mine rub the exhaust a bit..

They grab like no other.. awsome in mud.. but slow in sand and very heavy. donuts can be tricky on a fresh set... wants to flip you.

6 Ply. so they don't puncture, but they are stiff and heavy.. consider Maxxis like Huffa has on his.. they look pretty good and i think they might be less than 6 ply wich is a good thing on a trike !

Well if you have bare metal showing you most certainly should prime it.

The grey stuff for bare metal and the red primer for heavily rusted metal.

I primed all of mine and if you get that same gold paint I mentioned DON'T be too anxious to coat it too heavy or you will get runs! If it doesn't all cover on 1st coat let it be till 2nd coat. 2 nice light coats and that should do it.

Ok. I'm hopefully going to have them painted by next week sometime (don't have the paint or time right now), so I will post pics of what it looks like afterwards.
Thanks for all the help.
Oh.. and one more question.. how many cans of paint did you use on all 3 of your rims, Huffa?

bigredhead
07-08-2005, 12:21 PM
I"m sure 1 can will do it.

nouseforaname90
07-08-2005, 12:46 PM
All 3 front and back of the rims?

Huffa
07-08-2005, 01:11 PM
Well I painted 2 other rims before the SX's and had to get another can but I think one should be enough for 3.

This wheel paint (in my area anyway) is not easy to find so call a dupilicolor dealer, auto store or what ever and see if they have it.

It is Duplicolor gold wheel paint. I don't have any stock number on it but did get it at National Auto. They only had one the 1st time and i had to go running all over the place for second one.

Yeah.. there is this guy at the Hazen Flea market that I always get my paint from. He buys it in bulk and has EVERYTHING for cheap. I remember seeing like 10 cans of gold Duplicolor wheel paint for 2 bucks a can.. I should have grabbed it. Now I'm probly going to have a heck of a time finding it.
