I am thinking about buying one of these or an ATC250R. Are there particular issues throughout the 86-89 model line that I need to look for? What are the differences between the years? How often do the two stroke 250s need to be rebuilt? Are parts hard to find? Thank you.

Swingarm length is different.

I ride a lot and my R was going on its thrid season with the same topend. Parts are easy to find and fairly cheap.

I say no matter what one you buy if there is no proof the topend was just done, pull the topend and inspect it before riding. I have bought many used 2 strokes and everyone of them has had a topend failure soon after buying. I have just made it a normal practice to pull it apart and regasket if nothing else.

250R is very reliable if you leave it near stock, only normal mods pipe, filter, reeds. If you start getting lots of internal mods and big bore parts it will get less reliable.

I would look for an 88-89 model, primarily because thats my favorite style. Get the 89 clutch upgrade if you go for the earlier years.

ProFF?

What are typical prices on a nice TRX250R?

Since the introduction of the 450's prices on trx's have fallen drastically. I have seen nice ones on ebay for $2,000-3,000.

Here's the one I'd consider if I was after a new quad... http://www.servicehonda.com/service.html

Exactly, and besides the "new motor" what's so great about the EX setup? I thought the old late model TRX250R IS the HOT SETUP!?!?!

Are there any forums on the net dedicated to the 250R?

Yeah, I check in there about once a week. There's WAY too many punk kids there for my taste but luckly there's a few seniors that still answer questions from time to time.

I have been keeping up looking into the TRX250R, but man, it's either $3,400 or bust at $5,500. I know that these machines are great and modified but wow. I am really set on a two-stroke Honda, but the fact that nice ATC250Rs are scarce and the TRX250R's are so high, I'm better off with the bargain LT250R or going with a one year old 450R for in the high $4K's.

I'm not doing the boo hoo thing, just disappointed. I want to get my foot in the door at a decent price without robbing someone or getting robbed.
