I am the proud owner of a 1980 yt125, which I have begun to modify a bit, welded up a cooler rack that clamps to the grab bar and I put some forks form 225dr dxr (not sure of model) on the front, for some suspension, kinda looks like it's chopped 20 feet back or so.
Currently she's not running, and I will try to explain as detailed as I can below (plz, bear with the length).
Heres a the condensed version of what I believe went wrong.
Basically the cylinder is screwed, it has a small gouge right by the exhaust port where the piston hit, it was way loose.
The trimoto ran great when I bought it, and then started losing compression and there was a bit of oil by the head, so I figured I better change the head gasket. Did that, I had oodles of compression after that, even before I started it. Started it, it ran for about 10-15 minutes. Before blowing it again.
Now I'm no mechanic by any means (I will have a few very mechanically knowledgable buddies who could assist me throughout the project), but this is my best account for what happened, I didn't really check to see if the piston had play side to side, when I changed the head gasket. I'm assuming all that compression, put alot of pressure of the piston (mind you it probably had some play). When it fired that pressure forced the piston to gouge the cylinder, and destroyed the bearings that are inside (I think the connected rod to the crank), I'm sure the crank seals are shot too.
So now I'm looking at a full rebuild, new yt125 cylinder or possibly it could be bored out to correct the tiny gouge, new full gasket set, new piston, new bearings. A TON of moolah to fix.
It's very hard to find a yt125 cylinder and boring the old one would be very pricey. I've found a few yt175 cylinders and I know a IT 175 head will fit it (I have one from my first toy, god that thing was fun).
I guess what I'm trying to say is, do you know if a yt175 cylinder(any year or specific) will fit on the yt125 block (guess it's the crankcase). I would need the 175 cylinder, piston, the pin, bearing, the head which I have IT175, a probably a carb from a 175, and exhaust. If it worked it would have a bit more power I'm sure.
If you could give me as many details about your swap I would be so greatly appreciative. I appologize for such a long message, I've got all these ideas flowing through my head of how I could do thing.
Thanks a bunch, Robert Swinderman
