Swinging a 8 pound sledge maul got old, so we put engineering to use and made a Mega Mammer Jammer wood splitter. This thing is EVIL!

A 50 pound weight dropped from 25 feet goes through a 2 foot diameter, 2 1/2 foot long walnut log like paper.

Its about simple physics:

kinetic energy = 1/2 * m * V-squared.
he force multiplies the higher the weight is lifted. The 50 pound weight at 25 feet per second falling speed gives:

0.5 * (50/32) * (25^2) = 488 lb- ft of energy. :naughty:

compared to the sledge maul at about the same speed, but only 8 pounds:

0.5 * (8/32) * (25^2) = 78 lb- ft energy

are your arms to weak to swing the sledge?

Yep, I split the splits with an 8 lb maul. Im just not stupid enough to ruin my back and elbows trying to split the big pieces.

Its not about strength, its about brain power. I can make the same size firewood pile with no injury or damage.

I can split wood long after you have thrown out a disc in your back and damaged the cartilage in your elbows and torn a rotator cuff. :w00t:

When you said engineering I was thinking more like this, not dropping a weight. As your pulling that weight up I'll be pulling a lever. ;)

yeah .. those hydaulic suckers rock !

Geek: Rid a pulley to the back wheel of your R pop the clutch to get the weight up.. and pull the clutch to let it back down !! lol......

Just take a fence post pounder and a tractor with a live power take off, bolt a triangular steel wedge onto the head of the post pounder then put the log to be split where you would normally have the post, then you're cooking with gas!

Awesome application of physics though! I've got enough tractors but no post pounder so I'll have to try that.

it isnt just a multi spliter its a complete firewood processign machine, you put entire 20+ foot logs on ther eand it bucks them down and cuts them and splits them and allu have to do is just put the log on the conveyor and remove the finished split firewood.
