I'm thinking of selling my streetbike for a couple grand to put some more money into my 85 Tecate. Plans are for a port job for low/midrange power, shaved cylinder head and a fresh bore/piston etc. What I'd like to know is how much I can shave off the Tecate head without running race gas?

About how much cash am I into with that?

After all that I'm going to run 18's on offset wheels and try and track down an extended swingarm. :naughty:

Depending on who does the porting, about $1000 - 2000 for all that stuff. Another 200 - 500 for a swingarm maybe?

Motorcycle BBS'es are littered with sad stories that have tried the same thing and have blown their engines sky high ** because they can't tune them.** It usually goes:

"I put this high compression head and piston on a ported cylinder and the exhaust gas temp went crazy and now the piston is melted in the bottom of the crankcase."

...and never a word about what they did to also improve the fuel system and ignition.

Or, do all those mods on a tight crank main bearing and see the bottom end come apart at 8000 RPM.

Tune what you have already and get some experience in "not blowing it up" then start adding mods one at a time. Then if it goes "BANG," you're out less money.

Look at the list below, youll see no mods to the engine like that, and it makes way more power than I can use. It blows the tires off in gears 1-3 even with a heavier sprocket ratio, so why give all that hard earned money to someone else that I could go have fun on?

There are two things you probably don't realize:

1.) There is always a lot more power built in any engine than they let on
2.) You can tune it, you just dont know it. :D

Ill chime in on mine, It has an MX port job to give it a very broad powerband, its great improves handling big time, then I had the piston lightened and windowed and that inculdes balancing, it has boyseene power reeds for a replacement, stock pipe. jetted for the coast, no air box lid and DG silencer. The combo is killer, it runs great with the stock pipe, i have a aftermarket custom pipe (coned and sectioned) to put on but im hesistant because it runs darn good right now. I coupled that with a 4 over swing-arm and 2" axle spacers on 20" 6 ply tires and it is just flat out fast and fun to ride, it has stock gearing (13...42). Im goin to the ricky stator setup once i have the cash, more compression will give you more low end at the loss of top end power. There is a way to give the tecate a big bore with a jet ski piston, ive heard it is possible at several sources one here another e-bay and fromt he guy i bought it from. I want to find that moto-plat ignition set-up. As for the carb the stock 32mm isnt very adequete in my opinion, i opt for a 35-36mm to give you a little better power delivery with these mods. Id go 10 thousands on your head, but to be safe check clearance at half that. Youd hate to grenade a motor just by goin a little to far.

I should have mentioned that my Tecate already has a 38mm TMX flatslide, V-force reed cage, full DG system, UNI filter(cut up airbox), Wiseco piston and a new sleeve...its not stock so I'm not just throwing all that at a stock machine. Chassis includes Progressive front fork springs, 01 Raptor rear shock and 2.5inch wheel spacers.

I really don't want to melt my piston or anything so instead of giving me reasons why not to do it how bout you put all your gramar skills to good work and tell me how to do it the right way?

As for the jet ski bigbore piston...I would but until I have no other option I wont waste my precious cylinder wall thickness on a Kawasaki JS650 piston and rings yet.

I know a guy that can do it all at a good price to www.cpcustoms.com he does motor work builds frames extends swingarms he does it all and has some good prices.

Im not really a pro at the whole engine building thing, but i know most of the basics per say. You shave .010 off your head id run race gas, higher ocatane, slower more effienct combustion. You can turbo cut your crank to bump up compression a little more. If your goal is low end as you stated in post number one, id throw the stock pipe back on and think about trading that 38mm carb down to a 35mm. All egines want to run im mechanical harmony, you have one part such as a big carb and have a really high compression engine the two dont want to mix to well, one component try to over power the other. Another more down to earth application to this theory would be auomotive engines, you want a race engine to turn 8,000 rpm but you want to do it as a stroker motor, longer stroke means its gonna take longer for the crank to make one complete rotation there for 8,000 rpm will be very hard to acheive safely, you would have a unblanced motor.
