Street Legal Trike, Thinking Out Loud

Do you all think, that if I had an aftermarket suspension atc frame that took a streetbike engine, If I bought a titled streetbike, that I could register it and put it on the road? Isn't this what people do with the Harley Trike conversion kits? I live in Maryland and it is something I've been thinking about for a frame I have that can take a yamaha rd350 2 cylinder, 2 stroke engine. I would just transfer all the parts over including the horn and turn signals. Any thoughts?

It should be fine. Just check with your local authorities and such and see what the laws are.

you can buy kits (we have one at my work) for the old Honda CB 500, 550, and 750 fours, and the 750K's

its a swing arm and axle from a honda (not sure what it is though) and it bolts right up, and you can run car tires, or atv tires on it, the hubs are easily interchangable with honda, suz, kawi and yam (if i remeber correctly)

But, dont come buy the one at my work, i am waitin for a good CB to come in and frankenstein it to a trike

I doubt any province or state would allow a trike to be street legal due to the solid rear axle. There needs to be a differential like on those kits you speak of to let the two rear tires turn independantly of each other. I sure would like a street legal 85 Tecate though. Some day when I'm that bored I'll run the bike to the DMV and ask the guy what needs to be done to make my trike street legal. lol Hopefully I get an answer like "Very little."

yea ive checked into it, you much have a rear diff, and turn signals and i think thats all they said you need for it to be street legal

Hope you have life insurance. Using a street engine does not change the chassis, and the fact that (like Big Green said) there is a solid axle. ATVs are dangerous enough on pavement without adding a more powerful engine.

Thats not an opinion, engineering fact.

I'm not so positive that the solid rear axle has anything to do with the legalities. Rear lockers are legal and very common on many trucks.

Full locking Spools are illegal on the street, lockers have built in components that allow the inside tire to turn slower then the outside one so the locker slips just like a diff.

Here in Newfoundland all you need is a headlight, taillight and a horn to be streetlegal, no signals required. I dont have anything but a headlight and working taillight on my streetbike, not even gauges and I have no problem from the fuzz.

a KLT has a limited slip rear end that nearly bullet proof. it isn't impossible to modify any rear axle assembly to fit another trike just a challenge for a smart millwright; and time and again the 85 - 86 KLT 250s have proven they have the ability to turn inside most trikes because of it.

This topic has been beat to death. Do a search and youll find what you need. Be aware that each state, (and country) has its own laws, you you may get over 50 different opinions which could all possibly be correct. You need to contact your local DMV for your state, and ignore answers from anybody who does not have first hand knowledge of YOUR state. They are useless.

One fact that is common in every state as far as I know, Is that your vehical is titled according to the VIN # which is located on the frame, therefore using an ATV frame with street bike components would not not change its being defined as an ATV. You would need to work from a titled street bike frame if your state has no provisions for street legal ATVs.
