how close can an exhaust pipe run to an clarke plastic tank? i have my exhaust on and there is only about 1/8" between the top of the pipe and the bottom of the tank. i fear this will melt a hole in the tank and blow myself up but mabye i am wrong?

as you can see my exh. header is lined up with mmy head. if i rotate the front exh. hanger down to get it away from the tank i will have to get the front of the pipe cut and turned up to still get t o the head. i thought that would be bad for power having a bend right out of the head.

- lonesometri-z - -this is your old rescue. i have the engine done and in. the front frame supprt welded back in. exh. done.
all i have left to do is put on the front master cyl.,get a rebuild kit for the rear caliper and put it on,attach the clutch lever and cable, and figure out the carb mounting. we'll have her done soon.

So its lost its original "metal" tank huh... well IMO I'd put some of that metal heat shielding tape under the tank, where ya won't see it anyway, just incase.

i've got the metal tank but only 1 broken shroud and it has a questionable interior and a dent. plus with the 300cc kit and 38mm carb i figured i oughtta run out of gas every 10 minutes unless i went bigger.

here are the pics of my trike. now ive only had the trike for about 2 or 3 weeks but its been on the trike for quite sometime according to the guy i bought it from and you can also see its faded a bit so its been on the trike for a while. there are no burn marks or any distortion on the tank.

i don't know.... i see yours is close too but i am still a bit scared. i was thinking about cutting the bottom of the header where it does its 90 degree bend and comes up and welding a 1/2" spacer in there to drop the expansion chamber down a bit.

Wow... how come i can't get responses like that in any of my threads! lol

IMO in my opinion... Got it. thanks.

Mickey, do you have any pics of that trike when you got it? If I remember correctly it was a real basket case. You've done a terrific job!

Heat shield is cheap insurance. Piece of fiberboard, asbestos or some non metal material. Be nice to see a half inch gap.

YIKES! Just a couple mm change can make a difference in performance. Unless you're willing to experiment like that I wouldn't touch it. Just get some of that heat tape and you'll be fine.

i wouldnt try altering the pipe at all i think the heat tape would be better but like i said you shouldnt need either one. i know my pipe never really gets that hot anyway vs the pipe on my 4 stroke that thing generates some heat my 250r's pipe is almost cool to the touch within a few minutes of me shutting down the engine.
