Hey everyone. My 85 250r is the first 2 stroke i've ever owned. Havn't had it too long either. At the risk of sounding dumb i have to ask, can someone explain to me what a power band is, how it works, and do all 2 strokes have them or just certain ones and does my 250r have them? I appreciate any education i can get in this matter. Thanks all.

Its not a REAL piece of the motor. Its the RPM at what the motor makes the most power. You will feel as you get on the gas, and shift through the gears, there is a certian point where the power really yanks you and seems to kick in. That is the powerband. 2 stroke tuning is mostly about altering the powerband, either at lower or higher rpm, or mid.
Thats the best I can explain it for you, I'm sure someone can step in and get real technical, but thats all you really need to now.

The large chamber inside the pipe draws out the spent exhaust (along with some fresh gas). Then, when the exaust moves out the pipe it suddenly hits the small part where the scilencer attaches. Sence more gas is moving out the small end of the pipe that can fit through, some gets pushed back (like a sonic wave) towards the port. As this exhaust moves back it also keeps the new gas from going right out the exhaust port. During the 2 -stroke cycle, the exhaust and intake are both open for a short period of time. So without the wave of exhaust coming back, more gas would flow out the port.
Now, This is where it gets intresting. At different RPM's The engine is moving at a different speed..When the engine is going faster, so is the exhaust. Sence the exhaust port is only open for a short time it only gives that sonic wave a very small time to bounce back..So, when the engine is going to slow the waves aren't making it back in time to push that extra gas in. BUT, when the speed is right the exhaust is creating that back pressure that keeps gas from escaping out the exhaust port. This is called the powerband..After a certian RPM the engine will be going to fast and the exhaust wave will be returning too fast, thus not making it inside the port in time...

What the hell are you guys talking about? The powerband is right next to the muffler bearings. Go to ebay, and type in powerband. There are a few high performance bands for your bike on there.

All motors (2&4 stroke) have a power band. 4 strokes generaly speaking have wide easy to use powerbands, while 2 strokes have more of a kick to them but the newer 2 strokes are getting to be much more rideable then they ever were.
A power band is also the WHOLE spectrum of the rpm scale from 0 right up to red line. All the 4 stroke trikes mostly have linier power bands which means the power is "flat" with no surprises all the way up to red line and thats why they are good wheelie bikes.
At low RPM's you are hardly making any power but is still considered part of the power band . When someone says they were "in the powerband" they just mean the portion where the motor 1st starts kicking in reaql healthy. If you go past the powerband, which is red line, the motor will pretty much go waaaaay down on power and you should be in the next gear. You always want to be, well not always, in the meat of the powerband where it is most usable.

Hey, ya know, in a way you can "buy" a powerband. Pipes, carbs, porting, timing, gearing all change the powerband so thats sort of like buying one but like said there is no "Um, I'll take one powerband please"
I might try that someday in a shop that doesn't know me.

I broke a power band, and MAN are they hard to change!
Seriously, yeah, its where the motor makes the "best" power, my 250R had one till I hopped the ignition and tuned it, now it screams regardless of the RPMs. Much of whats called "powerband" is poor tuning. Low RPM problems can include carb too rich and high RPM limit is mostly ignition. The stock 250R ignition starts to fade out at about 6000 RPM or over.

That link is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on this website!
I wonder who that was that bought the "Powerband" and if he installed it  ?
His emotions would probably go in this order: it arrives :w00t: he goes to install it  still trying to install :wondering now he realizes what he has

Think rubber bands, but more powerful. They're located under the gas tank. :D :D :D
Just kidding there, sport. A powerband is the RPM range that the engine works the best in, meaning you've probably felt a powerband before. It's that sudden lurch of power somewhere between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle, depending on the tuning of your engine.

Q: will this fit 4-strokes also?
A: Only if you cut 2 off

Guess i've been feeling powerband the last 4 years on my suzuki katana, just didn't realize what it was. There's a real sweet spot in each gear where the power really comes out. My R hasn't worked right since i got it and not running at all now, but i hope to feel the power soon in that one. Quite anxious to see what it can really do. Thanks again everyone.

I just read the eBay auction for the "powerband".
FREAKING HILARIOUS.
