before i repaint my pipe and motor this weekend i want to know for sure, will 500 or 1200 degree paint hold up on my motor and pipe? should i use the good pj1 stuff or regular auto zone stuff. im not removing the motor, i just want it retouched so that its black and glossy and clean again. i probably wont prep the heck out of it, just a quick sand and spray. does anyone have any advice or tips? any pics of motors painted this way? thanks for the help!

It's all about the prep work. Make sure you have a very clean surface before painting. I've done my pipes with 500 degree paint and it seems to hold up pretty well. I too will be painting my motor soon and I'm gonna use the same paint on the motor. The stuff I used was Rustoleum that is made for painting grills and am very pleased with the pipe. How are you cleaning your motor??? I used gunk engine bright and then used a wire brush lightly for my motor. I want to make sure there is a good rough surface so the paint has plenty to stick to. Let me know how yours comes out. I'll post pics tomorrow too. :w00t:

1st the pipe : Use the 1200 degree and roughen it up a bit so the paint has something to bite on. Of course make sure all the rust is off. I used different brands but if it's at the store where I'm looking I'll get the rustoleum barbecue paint but won't make a special effort to find it as others work well too.

The engine : I used this engine case paint (below) years ago and doggone it was a perfect match. I had to go down in the basement to see if I still had the stuff. You use the other stuff and it just won't look right as it doesn't have any sheen to it. Have no idea where I got it though. You could always contact the supplier in reguards to where the closest store is that carries it if your interested.

Since then VHT has added what they call Barrel paint that is a perfect match for when your doing resteration jobs and want a perfect match on the cases. Geez, in my opinion the Oxide paint matched perfect. Take your pick I guess?

Hey, I'm glad you brought this up because VHT has 2 new products that will interest us guys! I'll start a new post on it.

Hey Monster, just so ya know, don't do the same posting twice. I'm not a Moderator but they will tell you to have patience with the one you did and if a few days go by without replies you can always go on your post and just simply state "Bump" which will put it to the top again.

I wouldn't use that on the motor as it's too flat of a paint. I made some suggestions in Monsters other post and started a new one because of new products in paint I found, so check em out!

sorry guys i didnt mean to post twice, my wireless connection is very weak and halfway through submitting my first post, my internet froze. so i stopped loading the page, and pressed submit again. it must havesubmitted the same thing twice. i wouldent just waste everyones time and space by posting twice just to bump it up in the line.

do i need to strip the motors paint to repaint it? i was just going to clean then spray over the factory faded color. i wasnt even going to remove the motor, just tape stuff off then bomb it. can i use regular engine block paint from checker auto/auto zone? i dont care about the finish, i just want it to look descent. will the motor paint stay on if i just let it sit in the sun for a week? i can only bake on the pipe paint.

I painted my SuperTrapp headpipe with Duplicolor Flat Black 1200 degree Engine Enamel. I wasn't happy with it at first, because when I first fired up the bike it started bubbling and smoking. But after awhile the smoke went away. I still wasn't happy with the bubbling paint, none the less. Well I let it go, and now there are no bubbles. I guess it has a "shell" kind of a thing that bubbles off, and leaves the pipe black. I don't really get how it works, or know how to explain it. But it worked good, and has held up great so far.
