I've just had the clutch assembly apart and in the process a couple pieces fell of the end of the shifter shaft so I put them back on the same way. After putting it back together and running I found that now as soon as * push the shifter down it goes into the next gear when before * could hold it down and it acted like neutral. Any ideas?

Yup you put the clutch lifter cam in backwards or the spring isn't postioned right. I had the same problem on a rebuild one time and I think it was my first rebuild. I can't help you with a pic yet but will try to.

Since you had your clutch assembly apart, It could be that your clutch is out of adjustment. So I would try adjusting the clutch first, if that don't fix it then you will probably need to pull the side cover off and inspect for improperly installed parts.

I agree with Howdy, sounds like the clutch is out of adjustment. Normally you have to adjust it after you replace with new.
