A Schwinn Scrambler that's in decent shape. Just needs a good cleaning up with it only having surface rust on it..

I believe it is a 1981. Has original tires on but they are beat.

Wonder what it is worth?

............and to think by now, if I hadn't come along, it would be in the back of a garbge truck :(

the last bulk trash pick up day, a lady up the street threw away a 110 honda atc. I even knocked on the door to make sure they were throwing it away! the lady told me it doesn't run. I brought it home flipped the rotor and fired right up!
also found a west german stingray bicycle 20 inch sissy bar and all. wish I can sell it for a few bucks.
Oh I got $300 for the 110 bought a seat for $50, ran good good plastic, good tires. Oh what a idiot!

Yea, it's always good to check out someones "junK" and you made out well with the "junk" 110 :beer

I found a good Schwinn website and from what I learned that bike is worth between 75 & 100 dollars but I'm never going to get rid of it because it's all there and will shine up good and it fits adults well.

It will be my pit bike!

What's a "west german stingray bicycle" Is that a old schwinn also?

Hey you guys, check out my Scrambler now! It even surprised me how nice it got!

Selling this I would be firm on $150 and I probably wouldn't get it but then I'd tell them "Go ahead, find a 25 year old BMX bike that looks this good yet"!

I will never sell it though.

Sorry for the dark pictures, I must have something adjusted wrong on camera because it surely wasn't that dark out.

That chain is pretty cool the way they made the links white and it's in great shape yet too. The paint is hardly off the chain anywhere!

From 20' away it looks showroom, then 10' you see a few of the nicks on frame and 5' you see more but really the frame is in very decent shape too! :beer

"Go ahead, find a 25 year old BMX bike that looks this good yet"!

Sorry, I have to do it (not being sarcastic) :beer The Diamondback is a 1983 Turbo and the Hutch is a 1985 Pro Racer (I have had them since 83-85). Not 25 yrs old, but very cool bikes.

Well they are darn close to 25 years and very nice at that!

Were they real happening machines in thier time? What are they worth approx? Again.......very coooool! :beer Cost of them new? They all original?

Have any connections where I might find good original tires for mine? Mine are not bad at all cosmetic wise to look at but terrible as far as tread depth. I know the bike is worth more with the worn originals then brand new none originals so my plans are to save those and get some decent new ones on so I can ride the thing a bit. The new ones can be any brand and eventually I'll find some originals better then mine.

They are Schwinn Scrambler's 20 X 2.125 ........any replacement suggestions? The originals look like a really decent knobby and I really didn't come across any that look like that pattern at all but they don't have to be although it would be nice. Maxxis, Kenda? Fill me in, PLEASE!

Thanks!

Oh, are white walls still cool, because I like them.

Would this be cool and would it fit?

Were they real happening machines in thier time? What are they worth approx?

Hutch Pro Star & Pro Racer, JMC Black Shadow, SE Racing (Quadangle, PK Ripper), Diamondback Turbo, GT Pro Series & Mongoose Supergoose were the top of the line back then.

Worth? Depends. I know a complete, mint Hutch Pro Star now will set you back $10,000. Cranks alone is somewhere around $1,500-$3,000. My Turbo wouldn't be worth much to anyone only because in 1986, I stripped the black chrome finish off of it. Worst mistake I made was doing that. I have had offers of around $800 for it.

Cost of them new? They all original?

I paid $650 brand new for the Turbo in 83. It's all original (less the paint). In 1987, I broke the right crank arm and Diamondback would not honor the lifetime warranty the bike came with. 14 years later (2001), I found a set of cranks on Ebay and bought them for $350, sent the reciept to diamondback along with a copy of the warranty and they refunded the $$$.

The Hutch is "era correct". I pieced it together with parts that were around at that time. Total cost of doing that was in the $1200-$1400. Worth the money for me. Both bikes ride smoother than silk.

As far as yours, You should have no problem finding original replacement parts from the folks at www.vintagebmx.com. I also have a Schwinn bike shop a mile down the street from me. I'll check on the cost and availability of tires for you.

MY GOD,

I could buy almost 2 brand new motox bikes for that and I wouldn't have to pedal them! :D

I had no clue they were in that price range

You have a Schwinn dealer ship - very cool :beer

Thanks for thinking of me and checking the tire situation out! Any handgrips of that era possibly?

Now that I think about it there is a guy down the road from me that has a zillon bicycles in his yard. I'll have to do a spy job and see if there are any hidden treasures there. Thanks again!

There are so many Scrambler versions I am all confused. Why are some coaster brake models and mine are hand brakes? Some mags and some spokes? Is mine supposed to have a chain guard on or not ? If so, I'll drive back to the place and if I'm lucky they may still have it. By the looks of the brackets and how a bit of paint is off them it looks like there was one on at one time but I though maybe that exact frame was shared with a few models so maybe not?

Damn man, you like to stay busy, don't you?

Yea, I'm starting to get real busy! I'm heavy into buying and selling 3 wheelers and parts now and then I go and start this hobby too. I enjoy the thrill of picking them up and giving them a second life. The Schwinn looked baaaad, real baaaaad and cleaned up just great! It had the original tires on which helps with the value even though they only have at most 40% tread left. So what I did is took them off because I don't want to wear them down one bit more then they are. Before I did though I rode it not 200' down the road (just had to test it out) and spotted a whole pile of tubes in my neighbors driveway. Turns out he just bought out a 40 year old bicycle shop and I got NOS gumwall (I keep saying gumball:lol: ) tires for next to NOTHING!

He has 1000's of parts yet to come and his garage is filled now!!

Below is how it looks now and also is a pic of what I got for 10 bucks + there is even a bike missing in picture for that 10 bucks! What luck! That little chrome job will turn out really nice too. I think the "stingray" is from the 60's and it is a Columbia - Fair Lady.

The McGrath had a 2 year production run only and they stopped making it 3 years ago. I'm sure most of them are starting to get beat and left out in the weather just like the poor trikes do.

Hey Bob, post some pic's of yours, would you? Also, I saw the Walmart jobs and they have completely different frames then this one. Cheaper frames it looks like but I'm not positive. I have a lot of Mongoose learning to do yet and have to learn all the BMX terms for parts. I don't know much about them at all yet. I find it fun learning about them since I know everything there is to know about 3 wheelers

This is a bike that I never finished building from when I was a 15 or 15 (I'm 33 now). I still have it and it's mostly operational. The rear pegs have rusted off.

Its a Predator frame, Scorpion forks, RedLine bars, Pergrine Master "Graphite" wheels, Tuf-Neck goose and two piece sprocket, and a GT laid back seat post. My kids thought it was a heap til they saw me do a 180 off the bank of the driveway and a few other tricks. Now my 8 yr old daughter hardly picks up her bike and always is on mine. It looks rough, but still does its thing. Someday I'll do a restore on it.

This is funny because the other day I was searching through this dump on my property and found some very old huffy frames from the mid 70s. One has a banana seat, forks, crank. I was going to make it into a functional bike with another huffy but I just put it back up to the dump. There is also a very old bike from the 50's out in the woods. I think its one of the ones with the headlights. Not sure though, its been awhile since I've looked at it last. But those huffy frames are still in pretty good condition. Stip them and paint them and they will look like new. The banana seat has seen better days though.

Boy, I havent heard the name Skyway in about 15 years.;)

I'm pretty sure Speedbump has a set of Red Z-Rims in the beasement. (Plastic rims with metal spokes for those of you that arent into this stuff)

I dunno if I'll do a restore on it or not...it was gonna be Hot Pink and Black back in the day...I primed it and cleared it while the primer was wet, kinda made a nice slate gray with a suede look. Now it's rust with a touch of crud.

A few weeks ago I replaced the rear axle with one from a double stroller (along with the calipers). Mine was seized and wouldn't roll. We were chucking the stroller, so I grabbed the tires and rims off of it and cannibalized the axles and calipers. So far so good. It's not going anywhere. Someday I'll finish it.
Not exactly high on the To Do list these days.

  Yea, but these BMX'ers are so, so easy to work on towrds our three wheelers + the color combinations are just wild! Anything goes!

Also the parts seem quite cheap, well in my shopping catagory anyway they are. I guess you can easily surpass what trike parts cost but so far everything is well with in my budget.

I have been on ebey all night just checking bikes and parts out. Talk about bling!!! MY GOD there is so much it's hard to make a decision what to purchase and I don't even ride the things!

Next thing yopu know I'll be making a huge free style ramp in my backyard!

This is cooooool, real cooool :naughty:

You will not have to worry about that. I collect 3 wheeler stuff. In all honesty I don't have ANY desire for BMX, dirt bikes or any toy that pertains to it. I am what you call a TRUE 3 wheeler collector / nut. But even though I do have a bunch of 3 wheeler stuff, there are others here on the forum that has a lot more than I do.

Meh. I'm too dumb to know how to resize and post pictures (Yes, I've read the sticky thread on how to do it). Huffa, can I send these pictures to you so you can resize them and post them for me (If you know how?). There pictures of the bike frames in my woods. Very old school looking frames. Not even close lol. It does have the banana seat. But look at the handle bars, there connected to the forks. Theres also a sticker that says BMA/6 down near the crank. The sticker on the neck said something like inspector or something. So I don't think its a huffy. But whatever it is, it's cool.

The second bike frame which is blue or black is the same model I'm pretty sure. Those are some very old bikes I must say. Must be late 60's early 70's? I think I'll do some research.

I have had a 20" chopper bike from the 70's, factory made not forks welded together or anything like that. Anybody know anything about these? Who made them, a website, anything. Has banana seat and the short ape hanger type bars on it. I have had it since the early 80s, and have been seriously thinking about redoing it.

Man like I needed to get into any other hobbies right now... Just went out to my parents house and dug out my old 1986 REDLINE:w00t: Man, its been a long time since ive seen that thing. Its thrashed now too. Grr, I should kill my little brother. It belonged to my older brother, he bought it new, then gave it to my little brother, cuz I had built up an old school Huffy all set up for race, number plate and everything, then they closed the track here. So I rode it for about 2 weeks after it was done and it got stolen out of my backyard, I think I know who stole it to this day, but I could never prove it. :( My brother ditched all the old school stuff on the Redline, and put newer parts on it, (and even those are gone now, who knows where it all went) he got bored with it, and gave it to me in peices. Maybe now 12 years later I'll get it back together! All thats left is the front forks, frame, and crank, and an old school Kawasaki Team Green sticker. hehe all the original frame decals are there but in pretty bad shape. Dont know if its better to leave the originals there, or look for reproduction ones? Oh well, this thread is pretty cool, lets keep it going. HH

350xiliration... thanks for posting those redline pics. Scottjz as well. I had most of those bikes you talked about. I think this is way cool. I haven't thought about these things in years! I still get excited when I watch E.T!!!

Huffa.. Keep your eyes peeled for anything like those ones (hutch, haro, GT, skyway, etc. etc.) Those bikes were a couple hundred bucks a peice back then. Imagine what they're worth now in good shape.

The only one I have left is my diamondback superstreak. the whole bike weights about 10 lbs. Well at least I still hope it's in my buddies basement. I was thinking about fixing it up for my son but was going to wait till he's a bit older. Seems like he goes through 2 bikes a year. Just absolutly destroys them. That's ok for a walmart bike but not no old school racer...

Huffa

Is this coincidental or what ??????????? Pretty freaky ! ......sort of.

Here's the story.

OK, I went to my freindly neiborhood Honda dealer and on the way home took a different route back thru country roads. I always take a different route where ever I go to cover as much 3 wheel - BMX - any old bicylces "possible find" territory as I can.

While I didn't come across any thing exciting I did find a Antique store in the middle of no where sort of and did a reversie and went inside. Before entering I see a old, VERY OLD, REALLY REALLY OLD bicycle hanging up on porch ceiling that was mostly all rusted but even with the rust it had a very high cool factor. So I go inside and ask the very nice little old lady and she says it's 1920's or so and has a WOODEN front rim. I don't know, I thought that's something you don't come across much at all and then to top it off the whole bicycle is only 45 bucks! So anyway that's part of the story.

The other part is I found comic books that are quite old and flicked thru a few pages real quick and ended up buying 3 of them. I only looked at the front cover and a few pages to make the decision, BTW. So I get home and look at every page and find out 2 are from 74 and one from 65. I flipped the 74's over to back cover and found strictly advertisements for games or toys or whatever and go to the 65 mag, check out the back cover also and there is a full page advertisement for a Sears Free Spirt Stingray and the coincidence is that I just put a deposit on one of those 2 days ago!! Not the exact year but darn close.

Pretty cool! ;)

I think I'm going back to scarf up the old bike with wooden rim too. I think it's like a 27 or 29". Way beyond restoring but looks quite cool as is.

She has about a dozen comic books left too at two bucks a piece.

ALSO, I passed a nice 64 Schwinn lemon yellow 2 seater in real nice condition. Guy is asking 160 which seems cheap to me. Seem cheap to you too? I thought they are worth 3-500 or so?

Chris, by all means, fix that baby up! Lets see some pic's of the "gem" :beer

.............something quite  cool  ! At least I think so.

I want to see if you guys can guess what is possibly inside it!

I had not a clue what it could be and could not open it either till I got home. I was soooo excited wondering what it may be and even when I opened it I STILL didn't know for a minute or two! It is in imaculate condition and the only clue I'm giving is that it is handy for when you are in the pits or camping out. Directions came with it also.

If you have one or know please don't ruin it for the others that are guessing.

One other hint is it will "fit" kids a bit better then adults but adults can use it too according to what the directions say.

Some of you may not find it that thrilling but since it is quite ingenious how it is made, I do.

It is 32"X13"X5". Cool that it comes in Honda red. All that I need is a big wing logo for it now :naughty:

See, being a pac-rat pays off sometimes, well for me actually most of the time lately. :D

The blue & black job is a few years old, while thew silver one is their 06 model.

They are both XR 250 models.

The old one has fork tubes that carry up to top triple clamps while new one does not. The old ones swingarm section looks way beefier too. The new one does have a front disc brake though.

I like my "old" one more.

Just a cost cutting method to keep the price the same on the new one or what?

Huff, you have to remember that mongoose has now sold out to Walmart. So obviously the bikes arent going to be the scale they used to be. It seems that mongoose is taking over the "huffy" market in the average market store.
They used to be pretty nice stuff but since they went out of bike stores and in to retail stores, the workmanship is struggling.

Ya know, I am amazed and stunned how many things people are just willing to give away! I'm also amazed at just how many things you miss driving if you slow down a bit and spy into back yards, open garages and barns, etc, etc.!!!

When I see things I simply go right up to the door and ask : Excuse me, but I noticed that you have a bike in the weeds over there that needs a few things and was wondering what your plans are with it"? I never make an offer and try to make the bike seem worthless and in a sense I'm not lying because to them it is! SO, most of the time they just tell me to take it away! Just an hour ago a guy called me up because I spotted another nice mountain bike with weeds growing right thru it and left a note. That one is nice though and everything works but just starting to rust. I got that for 10 bucks and am picking that up tomorrow.

The Mongoose a few threads up from here that you saw I spotted that the day before and must have been on that road litterly 100's of times per year but I never really started my spying attitude till a few months ago. That I got for free and the guy was HAPPY that I took it away THEN to top it off HE GAVE me his 1978 Ski- Doo Blizzard 5500 snowmobile!!! :Bounce

Needs work of course but he said 2 years ago he drove it and just needs points and condensor. Now I know, JUST KNOW it's going to need more then that but for free how can I lose!! If it needs too much I'll just part it out but I do think I can get the sucker going again. It looks like this one on left and only has 1200 miles on it.

http://www.vintagesnowmobiles.50megs.com/PP3212.html

If your nice to people 90% of the time they are nice back but you always will run into the type that give you the  get off my property feeling ....so I just walk away and take off quick. That's extremly rare though.

I have quite a few things I got that I didn't even mention for fear you guys won't beleive me!

Go ahead try it! You'll be amazed at what you'll see & get!

Lets see now, tomorrow I pick up the 10 dollar one. thursday a vintage 1960 one for $20, Friday a vintage 60's schwinn that might be worth 5,6,700 or so or maybe more and that guy is asking a whooping 100 for that!! Still more yet I want to look at but I need more $$ :(

Seriously, give it a try and see what happens!! If they are not into the internet and it's a old bike or vintage what ever you got the sale going your way already as far as snatching it up for a good price.

So SLOOOOW down and look more and get back to me and let me know what you found!

I'm getting tired of writing notes over and over again so I just made these up tonight and I'll just put at bottom what I am pertaining to on their property.

I even thought of giving a whole batch of them to the newspaper guy and telling him to deliver to evry 3rd or 4th house in my area :naughty:

Powder Coat it gloss white, frame, forks, handlebars, show NO chrome on it whatso ever, get the reproduction Skyway decals (i believe they go on ebay for like 12 bucks every so often) you can get a set of Skyway Tuff mags here (www.danscomp.com its under the parts section in wheels)

Go with a vintage 1 peice crank, they are stronger then you might think, i am still using the 1 peice dyno crank i have had off my Dyno Detour, and it was a 1987, lol

Drain pipe seat post, also powdercoated white, with a white plastic seat, white grips and white Odessey tires, and of course, white pedals, crank arms and sprocket

Saw handlebars sticking out and thru the top of a heap of garbage in front of someones house. Wasn't sure what it was till I did a You-ie, parked and walked up to it.

Pretty darn seet! :beer It is a EV Rider Xport Model 711

All that I need is the charger to it I think. As you can see when I turn the switch on the little red light comes on showing there is somewhat of a charge but not enough for forward momentum.

The rust you see I have already taken all off. Can't wait to try it out! Specs and technical info here : http://www.electric-bikes.com/scoots-p.htm

The way it works is pretty cool .........Ease your foot down against the XPort's spring-loaded rear fender :naughty: , and the patented RiderPower drive system kicks in, zooming you along at speeds up to 17 miles per hour. Take your foot off the "gas", and the totally free-wheeling XPort glides soundlessly on, with no belt or chain resistance to slow you down! :naughty:

What unearth are people thinking when they throw things like this out? :wondering

OH, and I also got a PERFECT front bumper that fits on a 90 Chevy Tahoe, although I'm sure there are quite a few years it will fit. It's PERFECT, not a dent in it. Has rust on back side but the front is just great so if any one is looking, I got one! The guy got a custom one and he sat that out with the garbage..........unbelievable   I'll just hold onto it till I see a Chevy -GMC with a mangled front bumper, leave a note and it should sell ;)

Hey I could do that with my Mongoose but sort of hate to take away the originality of it. I did just win this NOS front wheel & tire combo though and plan on finding same set up for the rear. I just don't want to ruin the stock wheels-tires at all.

I got it (Mongoose Decade - Freestyle Job) for free today and remember seeing that low center of gravity rear brake set up some where + it has a really odd shaped frame at top by seat. Also has locking brake levers.

True chromemoly frame, so it says.

Any idea once I spiff it up, get a few odds and ends what the value would be? What approx year is this anyway and what did it retail for?

Nice score.

As far as worth, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Harsh, I know, but true. No price guide has ever been established.

I'm not sure of the year. I would say say late 80's to early 90's going by the decals. I'm probably wrong though. I didn't get into freestyle. My balance was off for that, plus the geometry of the frames was all wrong.

It's amazing how much stuff you've come across in the last couple weeks.

Yea, I know that is true but there seems to be a value range for every bike.

For instance most the ones I'm getting are in the 80-150 range I'd say, then from 150-300 and THEN from like 300-6,700  if it is the "right" BMX'er!

This one for some reason I am hoping is at the 200 mark if I do it up nice but I have to of course research it more. I just like the odditiy of the frame (tubing wise) and hoping it helps jack the value up a lot. Dig the lower brake set up too.

Your amazed at what I found from a few short weeks of just getting in to it?

Check out what I was up to today! :naughty:   Going to keep the beautiful vintage classic Schwinn World tour for myself, the silver, Oh man, I forget the name but it is nice too and the Huffy Classic Cruiser

Bought brand new? Now wait a minute, you told me it was about 2 years old when you got it? Really doesn't matter though but what did that list for approx new and I think you said you paid 280 or was it 380 for it?

Also, I can't recall why you said you had the other rear wheel on? Was it just because it is geared higher or what? I put the original back on and the value is slowly climbing again! Worked on it today some again.
