Hi dudes i have a 83 ytm200 that me and my dad have been working on for about a year. Today we took the carb and the 2 screws off to clean the carb. Then the worst thing happened possible!! My dad doesnt want to take the engine apart he says thats worst case sonario. But 1 screw fell in the hole that you mount the black rubber tube to the engine :( :( :( . We cant find the screw. Also are elctirc start option is dust to dust. ITs only pull start know but at the moment its no start because the screw jammed the pull rope!!! Anyone got any ideas to get it out??? PLease help anyone Thanks Joe

just take off your pull starter

can the screw go allthe way into the pull starter? Joe

Hmmm.... I'd think your screw would have fallen into the cylinder. Do you have one of those magnetic fetcher tools? You can put that in where the screw went in, or take out the spark plug and go in from there. Basically an old radio antenna with a magnet on the end. It wouldn't get into the recoil starter.... if it fell in where the carb bolts to the cylinder.

ohh i just realized what you said.
do what he said and if what he said dont work then tip up the engine and wush it around and try his idea again

If you cant get it out with a magnet, you'll have to pull the head off. I think a magent should get it, it wouldnt have got by the valves.

hey, magnet through the spark plug hole.

It wouldnt have got by the valve i wouldnt think, so it wont be in the cylinder. You would have to get it through the intake side of the head with the magnet.
Dont turn the bike over at all, you might get it lodged in between the valve or something.

Did you try starting the motor after the screw fell into the Black tube ( intake manifold? )? If you did try starting it, did the motor turn over some and then stop suddenly?

If so, it is possible that the screw fell into the intake manifold and down into the valve where it possibly got wedged holding the valve open. If the vavle is held open the piston will hit the valve and stop the motor from turning over. If this is the case, it's possible the vavle might have gotten bent when / if the piston hit it. I hope this isn't the problem, but I have seen it happen.

Another possibility is the screw fell in through the vavle into to cylinder. I might also add that it is possible the valve was open in the first place and it fell into the cylinder.

How to get it out: Remove the pull starter and rotate the engine backwards a little. Take the spark plug out and then using a fishing magnet ( like 350x'inNY described ) try fishing for the screw via the spark plug hole ( like 4cylinders stated ). If you can't find it then try fishing it out via the intake manifold ( Black tube ). More often then not I have found you can get them out via the plug hole though ( if it's in the cylinder ).

I hope this helps.

Everything that Howdy said, and if all that fails.. consider the valve covers, might be able to find that in there..

Good luck !

Worst case scenario , Bent valve - Couldnt he just change the reed block and be done with it?

I don't think you are the first to drop something down into the motor.
Sounds like Howdy has some experiance ,,, probbly fixing other peoples goofs :). I know I am experianced (knowing what I done wrong before)
I dropped a timing chain sproctet bolt down into a motor once. I can't remember what motor but I ended up pulling it and shaking the bolt out.
When ever I have that area of the motor open ,,, I do what all manuals say to do ,,, cover the opening with something.
I think this could be a very good thread starter of a quiston.

Yea, it sucks dropping stuff in the motor, I just was finishing putting my top end together on my ytm200 and i was going to put the dowel in the cylinder bolt hole, but I dropped it, it somehow got by the cloth that i had stuck in the timing chain slot, and landed behind the flywheel. I had to pull the flywheel and dig it out of there, cost me another hour or so, by the time I got the puller from the shop.
But anyways, this is way off topic. I hope you get it out of there YTMBOY

i've dropped the locating ping for the spark advance down into a bottom end..

Came right out when i drained the oil tho.. phew....

don't freak.. it happens.. if it can be built.. it can be taken apart. It's not a bottomless black hole.. just take your time and get it done.

I have had them come in this way, and I have done more than my share of dropping parts into the motor. The worst ones is when you drop a cir-clip for the piston into the bottom of the motor. I have done this a few times, each time I could make a old Biker dude blush.

Carbs don't usually die.. or wear out.. the parts inside it do tho.

Get a rebuild kit ! cheap, and works well.

Yes carb. kits are cheap, BUT they don't sell them for the Yamaha 4 stroke trikes (sucks doesn't it).

*EDIT*
OK, I have been doing some research and it looks like you can get a carb. kit for the 92-98 Timberwolf YFB 250. NOT all the parts are the same but according to the Yamaha part numbers the Needle valve, pilot screw and jet holder are the same but the main jet, throttle screw, and pilot jet are different. I have not bought a Timberwolf kit so I don't know exactly come in it.

You can get a Moose brand carb. kit for $19.95 and use the needle valve from that or get a Yamaha needle valve for $33.01. But DO NOT USE THE JETS FROM THE TIMBERWOLF KIT THEY ARE DIFFERENT!
