I'm fortunate enough to have a little extra money, just a little and am considering the following. A local guy has a CLEAN 1986 honda 350 x for $1500.00 original owner all stock including the tires. I bought my 250R's from him and they were quality also. or. Another guy I don't know has a pretty clean 1984 tecate for sale that looks as though it was a dune trike mostly, pretty clean and looks nice. $1300.00 for the tecate. Or. Buy a esr 310 kit for one of my R's with a atc 5 pipe and silencer and bigger carb to go with it as well as some new plastic. Both my R's are stock and pretty clean but the one I want the kit for is my daily rider so I'd like the power. I suppose I could get the esr set up at a later time since I don't plan on selling my R's. I just fell in love with that tecate though. Just open desert and dune riding for me out here. What do you think guys, There are also a couple of tri z's for sale I haven't seen yet but thought of for a second. Thanks....Dove.

My first reaction was get the 350x since it offers a very different experience from a pinger. Then I saw that you just ride dunes and "open" desert so then I was thinking it wouldn't really get used much over one of your R's. Tecates are cool but the first gen has lackluster suspension compared to what you're used to so again, it probably wouldn't steal any time from the R's (definitely a cool and powerful trike though).
In conclusion, a top end kit would probably net the most benefit for you. Since your R's are stock, you're in for an eye opening experience when you start modding them up real nice. There's a LOT of untapped power in them. Hell you don't even need a new top end. Pipe, carb, rad valve/v-force reeds and a really good port job will wake them up something fierce.

Hmm well if it were me i would go with the 350X or a tri-Z(just because they are the most beautifull trike ever) because out here no sand.. just snow so a good reliable 4 stroke is your best friend lol. But Sand duning.. Upgrading your R's would be sick, then again if you can handle a little more bumpy ride the Tecate would be a nice addition to the family. Lol i just love trikes so much i would sell my wife and children and buy then all!!! but im sure you cant do that.. lol So the Tecate or the 310 kit.

That's what my buddy said too. I also thought about a slightly wider axle also for nice sliding and stronger for jumping. That tecate just looks nice though. Thanks for being a voice of reason and reality.

Id go for the tecate or the 310 ESR kit. The tecate handles fine, look at how many races Jimmy white won on it. Granite he tricked the suspension a little, lol.

You already got 2 R's.... That 84 Tecate won't be much better..
get the X, mix it up.. if you ever go trail riding with the ute quad buddies.. you can take the X and putt along and have fun.. or simply thumb it and smoke them all.
Get the X.

No reverse on any of the sport trikes, except the 250sx which is a four stroke. other trikes that have reverse are the atc250es bigred, kawasaki KLT 160, i THINK the Alt suzukis other than the 50, and the yamaha 225 dr
ohh and the polaris 250 r/es but there rare

Get the 310 kit then Pipe, carb, rad valve it. You might want to get some sorta arm braces though, your arms will be pulled from your sockets!:w00t:
PM Mr. Sandman here on the boards, I know he has a 310 kit in his R and all he does it dunes, so ask him what he likes about it.

Modding your R would be the direction I'd take as well since you already have it. Offset wheels would be cheaper then a Durablue axle and the money you save would be better spent on a Paul Turner pipe, Vforce reeds and a port job.

Kintore, I like your attitude. That's want I want, arm pulling out of the socket power. I rode the tecate today on pavement. It was pretty fast and clean, the 350x would be nice to have but I don't think I'd use it that much. The 350x isn't really for sale anywhere. I think the guy will sit on it til I buy it as I do some work for him and his son. I think the scales are tipping towards the esr set up. Maybe I can save up for the x for summertime. I just sent the forks in for service on my R so now would be a good time to order the parts from esr. Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll let you know when I finially decide.

Big green machine, Can I still get offset hubs for my R, or do you mean wheel spacers? My axle is still straight on both r"s. Cheaper is better. Thanks for the help

Offset wheels can be ordered from Douglas or ITP, phone it in and they should be able to hook you up brother.

If you like the snappiness of the 2 stroke pingers like I do (simply awsome if you ask me) and a nice suspension you would be much better off modding your R, especially since you are a wide open dune riding type of guy. Dont let the alure of a different, new trike sitting in you garage sway your decision, take it from someone who knows and owns multiple trikes, I own all 2 strokes for a reason and the 85/86 250R is still by far my favorite trike. The R will always get 90% of the attention even if you don't mod it. Dont listen to these 4 stroke guys that do not own both try and help you make the right choice. Granted the 350X is an awsome trike and it does have its place for certain people but not for the the wide open thrill seeking dune riding type of guy. I thought I had to have a 350X untill my bro bought one and left it in the shop by the house and said ride it whenever you like ( it was in immaculate shape I must add), I rode it 3 times tops for less than 15mins. each. Think of it like a girl, you know she is the right one to marry shes nice, shes attractive and would be just what you need to settle you down and make a life with but the partying, hagging out with the guys 3 maybe 4 times a week is now over. Thats the 350X. Now think of a girl that simply makes your blood boil, heart pound with excitement, you know shes dangerous, you know she is going to be hard to handle you probably dont even know if you can trust her but you also know that she is about to take you for the ride of you life and that just makes you want her so badly you just cant help yourself. Heck thats without the 310 kit, add that and MAY GOD HELP YOU, thats like adding a $5000.00 set of tits of your own design to her. That my friend in a nutshell is the Almighty 85/86 Honda 250R. LOL That may be a wierd analogy but it fits and should get the point across . good luck and heres to ya making the right decision.:beer

It's a 350X with a CRF450R motor. No problem to keep up to a 310R with this.

Nice 350 x mod! I bet it hauls! I looked at the tecate again tonight and really really like it, but as 250rz said It may just sit. I want it just to have it although it looks like a blast in the dunes. I am going to order the 310 esr kit with the atc 5 pipe and silencer. I'm going to use his recomendations on the bigger carb with the adapter to fit my stock airbox. I'm going to widen her up also by 4 inches and get new white maier plastic. Some of you suggested the rad valve so I will look into that as well. I currently have boyesen reeds in the stock cage. Iwill keep my other R stock for the time being. This will cost me a bit more than the x or the tecate would have been, but it will rip when I'm done. Hopefully my wife gets her digital camera so I will post pics before and after. Thanks everyone....Dove.

I still say think about porting the stock cylinder and shaving the head first. You'd be surprised what it can do and it's not terribly expensive. If after that you still want more power, get the ESR kit and throw the ported top end on the other R. Win win! :naughty:

I don't know much about it. A guy posted it on exriders. He said it totally dominates ice racing which is what it is used for. I'd like to build one some day.

lol. Yeah I don't know what is up with the front end. Looks like is was chopped off and raked out or something. Not sure what that other square tubed frame is either but I see a lot of ice racers like that.

Good advice, I think I want that arm jerking power for the hills though. I think I will take your advice for the other R and have it ported with a pipe and silencer. I'm not rich by ANY means but I sold some bicycles of mine and the wife gave me clearance to spend it as I wish (which is rare because she is so practical) So if I ever want that 310 set up now is the time. I tried to order it today but they were closed. I can't wait. I'll have it out for the rasor road trip I posted in local riding forum If anyone can make it out.:beer

Sorry! I'll go easy. Just kidding, really though these desert trips are just fun for me. It's all about just being out there and showing people parts of the desert they've never seen. There is a time to haul ass but I cruise with my buddies on fun rides. Big hillclimbs are another story. Each man for himself:naughty: Hope you can make. PM me for details on how to get to my place and what to bring. I've got 3 buddies with quads going so we can beat up on them. The x will be just fine.
