I have recently aquired a cheap 1985 LT230 quadsport. Its in good overall shape but i need help on the wiring. There are two stray wires coming from the left side of the engine, black and orange in color, and I dont know what they go to. If anyone has a wiring diagram for this type of quad please it would be greatly appreciated. Also I need a good ignition coil and pick up coil, if anyone has any good ones for sale let me know. All help is greatly greatly appreciated. I want to get this up for some winter driving.. lol.. Thanks in advance..

they go from your magneto to the tail light and lighting switch. black connects into the black/white wire that is connected to the tail light. And the orange goes to the Red/Yellow wire in your lighting switch. Here is a diagram. Lucky for you I just got one to along with the service manual ;)

wow your a god. thanks... I have another question. the orange and black wires are also like a fabrucy outside, or rope feeling. are these to the light still?

Got a pic? I'd say just follow the wiring diagram. There is one orange on the whole bike so I'd say that that goes to the red on the light switch and the black goes to the tail light.

okay quick question.. if I get a new pick up coil will I need to solder the coil wires to the wires in the harness? or is it like a clip ?? also do you think it would be easier to get a used whole stator assembly and all to try?

Tri-ZNate
12-01-2005, 07:19 PM
Whichever way is cheaper. And no you shouldn't need to solder

New2ATC
12-01-2005, 07:36 PM
allright.. im looking for used parts right now.. not much money to play with.. i hope theres no need to solder.. lol.. i think i need a clymer..

Tri-ZNate

Thanks to dirtface it runs. I rode it for the first time today and I love it. I need back brakes, right now its only got fronts, but it is a fun quad, and the bald tires make it a blast in the snow. plan to get more seat time tomarrow. And some pics too.. Thanks to all for the help, Its greatly appreciated.

 sounds like mine. No rear brakes but the front work to a point and the rear tires are so bald that you can only do 25mph on a recently plowed road without them spinning. Oh god this thing is fun.

New2ATC

well i got the rear brakes fixed. all they needed was a little fluid and they were working. This thing is a blast to ride, and spins on wet/sandy paement like none other. Cant wait to get the nerfs and exhaust though.. Oh yeah quick question.. should I go with a DG RCM steel exhaust or the cobra megaphone? the price is almost the same but I want to know like performance advantages and sound aswell ( loudness).. thands, and Im gonna try to get riding pics tomarrow with my friend/ roomate on his fl350 odyssey..

Tri-ZNate

go with DG if it is around the same price. I love the noise that comes from mine (loud and the megaphone wont be much better) and when you get on the throttle it just boogies. thats all I can say I mean if you can get a bassani do it but DG comes a close second. I cant wait to ride mine this weekend.

thanks for the input. I think I will try the DG unless I find a pipe on ebay for a good deal. Im not buying right now I need to wait till I get the cash, just wanted the input.. Thanks 250sx.
EDIT: also, do you know where I can get a decent skid plate for the chassis and the swinger? I ride in rutted rocky rooty areas and one would be alot of help. thanks in advance.

My 230 had a Cobra Megaphone and it was pretty loud. Nice snappy tone when you gave it blips of throttle, like hitting sheetmetal with a hammer. :) Brrrrat brraat.

Yeah. My friends 230 had a supertrapp on it, dont know if it was for his quad or just one that fit on there though. Im gonna look around for different prices and check ebay for a bit till I am ready to buy one.

best chance is to shop ebay for a skid plate. Right now I'm looking for a cheap rear to poke its head up.

250sx, you need a swinger skid for your 230? I might have one laying around/on my roller. I'll check if you want.

Yeah check it out and get back to me. The one that protects the rear disk, chain and rear sproket right?

New2ATC

yeah i need one of those too. I will search ebay as soon as i get the funds for it.
If worse comes to worse I gonna have some made by my friend who goes to the tech school around here. He said hed make me some out of aircraft aluminum.

I think I had one of the ones that protect the bearing carrier/axle/sprocket/brake disc.

okay i have another quick question. Does anyone know if any other model quad shocks/springs will work on the 230? My rear suspension sags alot and I want to see if I can swap it out with maybe a ltz shock/spring or something. thanks in advance.

The shocks on the 230 are really short, they only have about 5 inches of travel. I tried using a 300EX rear shock, which is only 1 inch more travel then the stocker, but even that didn't fit.

Tri-ZNate

I have no idea what shocks would fit. And New2ATC hopefully if we get our new camera this weekend (step mom is splurging with he raise, 5.1 megapixel digital camer with video and sound :w00t:) I'll have a video to post so you can see how that DG sounds.

here ya go.

And what do you think the outcome of the second video is?

nice vid. I only checked the first one with no sound ( its late and cant turn volume up much).. dont you just love how they like to go sideways on any terrain. Almost rolled it the other day when my back brakes decided to lock up and work good for once... was in 4th and my friend and I were on it and i tapped the rear brakes which put it into a skid, and a 90 degree spin then it went up and we threw our weight to the other side.. saved the quad from what may have been alot of damage, His ankle got causght in the tire... hes okay though...
sorry for the long post just thought it fit into the sideways category..

yeah the other vid has something to do with the leg getting caught by tire thing :D

my left foot peg has no ridges to grip your feet on. Ading them tomorrow with a grinder :naughty:

here is the other half of it. Listen and you'll be able to hear what happened.

New2ATC

in the first vid i noticed that when you went up to the left side and turned around you put your foot down. Why is this? Lol figured id ask. It sounds nice... Im trying to see if the baffle comes out of mine so itll sound allright for now. Plus i need to clean it out.. alot of buildup over the years.

the reason is is that my handlebars are so low that I need to do this so I can lean correctly. They are like squashed or something.

If you want more power by the way put a 10.25:1 piston in it. Man I miss mine (friend blew it up before I got the quadsport and when he rebuilt it he put a stock compression pistion in it :( ).

New2ATC
01-15-2006, 06:24 PM
I will consider that once i get everything else I need. According to the guy i got the quad from, it stopped running, and they rebuilt the engine, come to find out it was electrical, and then they sold it to the guy i got it from, and i got it off him. The only thing I know is it has not been running since about 94 or so. 250sx, I read that you put a SX carb on yours, How much did it affect performance, and will it be worth it considering my bike is all stock at the moment.

Tri-ZNate
01-15-2006, 06:57 PM
dont do it unless you do something performace wise like piping, boring, high comp piston, ect. Other wise it wont make a positive difference. And I'm actually considering jetting down because it will boggggg if you hold it at a constant throttle position.

Also the quadsport intake (from air box to carb) is like an inch short so I duck taped it. But if I wanted to do it right I would have found a flexible intake and put it where the gap is.

New2ATC
01-18-2006, 01:49 PM
Okay. I will get some mods done to it before I get the SX carb. Thanks for the information. Took the quad out last night to show my friend what a "brakestand" really was ( he ha da 6 cyl f150 and it didnt do much) and yeah i think I need new tires.. These bald ones break free on anything lol.

I need to get some new ones since my right rear wont hold air overnight. Maybe some fix a flat will work

New2ATC
01-18-2006, 08:33 PM
Yes I used fix aflat in mine.. works like a charm.. lol... yeah i am gonna feel bad for the guy when i get new tires mounted, but for now its good.

Hey If you want that high compression pistion, on ebay they have several auctions and some are for standard bore cyclinders. Like $74 for the whole pistion kit and the gasket kit which is worth $25. Some have 117 days left so there is no hurry

New2ATC
01-18-2006, 09:20 PM
Im gonna run it like this for now, and get it like .20 over in the future after i get other things done to it. Whats a good size to bore to? like i want it to be reliable still, but have a littlwe more power too.. any ideas?

New2ATC

Okay quick question.. anyone know where to get some cheap lights? like i dont like the looks of how the stock headlight is and i think if i can find some little round lights i have an idea for mounting them.. so any one know please post up..

Tri-ZNate
01-22-2006, 04:48 PM
Wal-Mart has those little round lights for cars that light up real good.

And as far as you previous post you can bore it out to anything up to .80 over and it will still be reliable, just a *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* to kick over. The only reason mine is bored .50 over is because we unknowingly ran it out of oil and then the quadsport had some issues with that.
