Hello guys!

I am the original owner of a 1985 250sx! Honda makes a tough machine. 20 years later and still going strong! I just started my restoration project and unfortunately I have a slightly bent frame. I found a 1986 frame on ebay. I looked up the part number and it is slightly different. Mine is 501-HA6-010 and the 1986 is 501-HA6-680. Obviously there is a difference. I am unfamiliar with the part numbers and was wondering if there is an actual difference? I guess the safe bet is the wait for an 1985 to pop up on ebay....but, its such a good buy!

Thanks.

I think that they are the same. There were cosmetic differances between the 2.Hope this helps.

if your doing an '85 SX restore and the part numbers are off a little I wouldn't get it. I wasnt aware that there was a difference though. Just the rear end, plastics, and tank color.

The 85 and 86 swingarm/axle/diff/driveshaft/brakes setup are different, but i'm told you can take the entire rear section swingarm assembly from an 86 and bolt it to an 85, as long as you have the whole thing.

What part of your frame is bent and how bad is it ?

bigredhead ask a important question. Depending on where it is bent will determine what to do.
But if you end up needing a different frame I can help. I have a couple 85 250sx frames. ;)

SX frames rarely even sell. They usually get under 50$ for one and roughly 30$ to ship it. Look for snapped off foot peg bolts and rot under the same area.

I have found all 3 years to be identical, but an 86 or 87 frame tag is much more fun to have!!!!

I am cleaning the shop of as many parts as possible. Only 50 machines and parts for at least 50 more to go.

I think I read the main difference to be the steering lock, whick wont affect much. The swingarm swap will be necessary.

87 frames are not identified by steering locks. A few people have mentioned this lately but, I own an 85, 86 and and an 87 SX and none of them have a stock steering lock. It may have been an option but it is not an indicator of the year 1986/87.
