i got to go for an amazing ride today, with my friend who owns a nice 300ex. we had a blast. that thing kept up though, im surprised how much the t4 slip on woke his bike up.
i realized how much i love my 'r. and id rather fix it up than sell it like i was thinking... i just have a few questions though, all help appreciated:
1. the back shock has almost no travel. what other shocks from other bikes will fit? how much would it cost to have rebuilt? how can i adjust it?
2. i need a new shift star, where would be a good place to look?
3. how hard is it to remove the engine? the top end needs paint, bad. id like to just touch it up with header paint, would it be easier to leave it in the frame?
4. how hard is it to replace the front and rear axle bearings? ive never replaced berings like this. how much do the bearings go for?
5. id like it to pull a little stronger through the whole range, how much would reeds/ boost bottle help? does anyone have a pipe for sale other than a dg for the 250r?
thanks guys.

also, id like to use my newfound welding skills to make an airbox. the previous owner took it off so the filterbolts to the carb. does anyone have the size measurements of the airbox? i was thinking of making it out of really thin aluminum, and using a y shaped adapter to utilize 2 filters.
i hate the way it is now, because if the filter gets wet, the bike runs like crap.

1. Worksperformance.com :naughty:
3. Remove the bolts that hold it to the frame, remove the carb manifold to the reeds and it should pull right out. And while its out you can change the reeds too.

sounds good. im really intimidated about removing it from the frame though. how long has it taken you guys? first off i want to replace the shift star, the rear shock with something else, and paint.

it took me about half hour to pull my tri z motor out when i was rebuilding the motor.
in dirtbikes i have done, its about 15 minutes to half hour, depending on how seized the bolts are...

Taking the motor out of the frame is a breeze. Really not much to it.
If you don't have the right tools to install new bearings, a shop can put them in for cheap if you take the swinger/hub in already removed from the bike.
More power throughout the entire range? 300R kit. ;)

haha dammit i like how you think. ive been scouting shops for a 300r kit, ive heard its a 9hp increase, which would hopefully put me in the high 30's. how much do they sell for normally these days? how about reliability?
how do you replace the rear carrier bearings? i dont even know how to take the axle off...
i wonder if a cr125 rear shock would fit. a few months ago i saw a 200x on here with 350x suspention. it sat high, and looked awesome. i want that type of agressive look on the back, as it stands now it looks a little saggy
edit: id also like to clean up the look of the front of the bike. this could also help cooling. how does it sound if i fab up some nice looking shrouds that pull air into the motor, and bolt up to the down tubes? i also thought about mounting a small computer fan to the back of the front fender, that way when im sitting at idle, or taking a break, it would cool down the motor.

I found a dude who has a good 300r motor i could talk to for you. I think i could buy the whole bike for 500-600 bucks so i dun do you need a whole motor or just top end?

well im just speculating now about the kit, it would be nice, and id like to have a whole motor so i could have a woods 250r setup and the 300r full blown duner motor to throw in sometime.
id pay 300$ for the whole motor, but im strapped financially at the monment. im going to work all christmas break to get presents and stuff like that. then il save for my resto.

One thing to check into with those old 300r kits is the availability of the pistons/rings and gaskets. I have no idea if those are still easy to get or what so look into it.

Derrick Adams put a cr500 shock on his 85r and that jacked it up, but like you said, finding a shock that fit is the hard part.

A way cheaper route to go with the rear shock is to try and find a progressive spring for the stock shock. Same travel but should net you some improvement in that it should handle the little bumps better while still not bottoming out as easy. I'm gonna try to find one for my 200x. I think they're usually under a hundred bucks.

Yeah but doesnt the swinger bolt go though the motor like it does on the 83?? If its froze like mine you be able to take out aggression w/ a real big hammer and or torch or saw-z-all

vented front fender would help with cooling, as long as you dont get into much mud
