Well i hated the purple frame so much that i decided it had to go!.

Started at 12
and by 2 i was this far
http://img286.imageshack.us/img286/1989/dsc072125uy.jpg

At this stage i got some motivation back as all along thinking about doing this i had been worried about the swiner bolt..... the hardest part of getting it out was undoing the nut on the end:w00t: :w00t:

by 4 this is the damage i had caused LOL
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9573/dsc000051tb.jpg

http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/8708/dsc000033sd.jpg

Im gonna get the rest apart , scrub the frame spotless and then back in yellow it should be :D :D :D
But im not only using this as an oppotunity to paint the frame but im cleaning everything!. I had to spend 2 hours on the engine to make a dent in the horrible oil  . theres gonna be a few new parts finding there way to the Z too.

Ohh yeh! The bit of the 85 i liked so much when i saw it first was the yellow frame. But 80% of the ones ive seen in the Uk have had the frames changed to blue or purple:wondering .

Im going to do a paint job. I will be doing it from a proper gun tho so i get a good finish. And over the yellow base im going to have some clear coat.

Now all i gotta do is the worst part.......... cleaning:rolleyes:

Good start to a great project!
If you really like painting, take the extra time to paint all the small parts too. It makes the finished prduct look that much better. What kind of paint will you be using?,spray can or gun?
I rebuilt/restored these 2 Z's.Both started out being black/red (85).Good thing I dont lead a normal life or I wouldnt have time to create such works of art.hehe I dont have any pics of the blue Z while it was being painted and assembled. The blue tri-z took about 2 months to complete,I brought it home in boxes from Ohio and only 90% of the parts(parts were scarce before 3ww got popular). The white/pink tri-z was kind of a rush job to have ready to take to Trikefest 05.That took about 3 wks and is a conglomeration of tri-z parts I had laying around. The motor for that came out of my red/black tri-z.I've been riding the pink Z quite a bit lately in the snow. The blue Z just sits on the shelf in my garage gazing down at all the other crap. :)
Keep us posted on the progress.

*edit* sry for the repeat paint question, I didnt read al lthe posts before I posted. :)

I dont have the code or # anymore. I had it written down but lost it somewhere along the way. The color is 'metalflake blue', thats all I remember seeing on the label; painted it in 2000.

I started off with it in my mind that i would just be cleaning the engine and stuff when i took it apart, but then i thought why not get rid of the purple! which then started my stripping engine cases off to paint in the worn patches:rolleyes: and then all the other parts aswell LOL. So it has snowballed into a complete clean up and refresh of the Z. I really love your blue Z, i have had a picture of it on my computer for a while now and thinking if only i could make mine so clean it would look great. And the flouresent one really makes a statement! lol. All the paint will be from an air spary gun, and i asked what type of paint it is and its an acrylic laquer cellulose based paint:crazy:  . I can see what i have started taking maybe a month or two to complete as i have decided i dont want to do a half job. Will certainly keep this updated. But there are no real updates yet as its all been dull cleaning of parts and prepping for paint. I spent 2 hours on the exhaust guard today   :Bounce . I think im gonna be spending all tomorrow prepping the exspansion chamber for high temp paint. :w00t:

Updates in the next few days will be slow as im going away for a few days aswell as sorting a computer for my mum:rolleyes:

Ive come up to a bit of a wall in the project now, Im needing to spend out to go any further.

Just found my bearings are toast...... all of them

Ive been battering away at the axle nut with no luck still. Fuel tank is in now and a couple of other small parts.

I now have huge respect for those guys who do mint resto's . You guys have patience to do those!

Willahh yes.the walls you bang your head on restoring a z.i know them well.lol.all the bearings are readily available.rear axle bearings and seals are the same as banshee axle bearings.the swinger bearings are the same as blaster and banshee. there are nylon bushings availablle for the swinger for 35 dollars.they last longer than the needle bearings.the front wheel bearings are also still available.my cycle guy has most of these in stock.let me know if you need help gettin bearings and i will try to help you out again. the z is lookin real good too.keep up the good job.i think the z was the best lookin of all trikes.they just look mean:naughty:. i might even build another for the wife.put your wheel hubs on the axle and lock one end down in the vice.then use a small propane torch to heat the axle nuts and a good pipe wrench to break them loose.

Thanks guys, Ive actually really enjoyed doing it.

Ive been banging my head against a couple of walls with it tho:rolleyes: . Thats awesome that there the same for both!. I will let you know if I have any trouble finding them but with that knowledge it shouldnt be a problem.

Im gonna be attacking the axle nuts tomorrow, ive dusted off the propane torch only to find I got no gas:rolleyes: but If I go gently with an oxy acetlene I shouldnt melt it into a pool:lol: . I got a question for you about seat covers that I will pm you about ;)

1984kxtTECATE Yours sounds like its going to be sick!!! make sure you get some good high res photos of her.:beer .

Thanks Jeb

The boots are Pro-grip ones, the smaller fork size they do which I believe is 34/37-47mm.

They fit quite well although arent orginial looking as they have more folds than stock. I just got a local yammie dealer to order me some up.

Thanks ride_red_95, thats the problem.... getting it done, if been playing with bearings the last few days and also getting my seat cover made;)

When I got the frame back from the blaster they had used quite a coarse media on it to remove the powdercoat that was on there,

So I first sprayed the frame with a coat of filler primer out of a spray gun over the top of a self etching rust preventing primer. After letting the filler primer harden for a few days I spray normal rattle can car paint over the top doing about 3 coats in total. Its pretty a pretty strong finish for what it is, When putting the engine in I wacked it on the frame a few times and it held up. Im sure with some more time to cure it will be pretty good.

Huh. Cool. I was going to get the X frame powdered for $100 bucks, but everyone seems to be saying that the spray paint holds up really goold.. and I could do that for $20. I'm not quite sure yet..
