i was out on my bike and ran out of gas went and got some for it put it in and the bike wouldnt start seemed to lose compression when i got it back to the barn and checked it out i think my kick start shaft is striped on the inside sometimes it wouldnt catch and other times it would a little bit i figured it was enough to start it but mayby not should it start only catching alittle bit? is it a big job to change the shaft i just dont wanna rip it apart if its gonna be a bigger job than i thought. i cant really see the motor being gone because it wasnt smoking or anything any help would be great

This isnt the kick start shaft..... this is what happens when the one way bearing goes. When it goes it sometimes totals the electric start gears and gives the symptoms you have. Heres a link to a thread with more info

Well I really know anything about it but I believe you get to it on the opposite side of the motor from the clutch and kick. Howdy will be along soon lol he will be able to help you far more than I can

My SX does that.. you kick it and it keeps clicking tic tic tic tic until things come to a stop.. horrible sound.. so i've been using the electric start instead.. until my electric start stuck.. another story.

Aparently it's a popular problem with the 85 250 es/sx motors...

This sounds like a Classic one-way clutch ( Honda calls it a clutch sprag ) problem. To fix it you must remove the right side cover, and pull the centrifical clutch. The one-way clutch is not hard to replace ( IMO ). It only takes about a hour or so.

quick question? i think that the one way clutch on the starter side is gone and the 1 on the kick start side is going. I don't want to use the Electric starter, only the kick start. Do i need to replace the both of them or is just replaceing the one for the kick start good?
