I need the procedure to check the coil and stator. i have an electrical grimlin that is killing me. when i push the start button i get spark for about 1 second and then nothing.
thanks

Just an FYI .... check out the reverse/neutral wiring harness for any issues - They have given countless 250X/300EX owners all kinds of electrical headaches.

Ignition Coil proceedure is: A) Disconnect the primary wire connectors and measure the primary coil resistance between the terminals (top terms on coil). STD is 0.1 - 0.2ohm. B) Remove the spark plug cap - measure the secondary coil resistance between the plug wire and the green terminal.
C) If the rest. is out of range, remove plug cap from plug wire and measure the secondary coil resistence = 5.8 - 7.2k ohms.

Ignition System Inspection is - Disconnect the CDI unit conectors, ground one test lead, then check:

4-prong plug - A) Ign. Coil Primary coil - Black/Yellow wire to Ground should read 0.1 - 0.2ohm. B) Pulser Blue/Yellow wire to ground should read 290 - 360k ohm. C) Reverse Switch - Gray wire to ground - reverse selector up = no continuity, selector down = continuity D) Ground line - Green/White to ground = Continuity.

2-Prong plug - A) Alternator Exciter Coil - Black/Red to ground = 100 - 300ohm. B) Ign. Switch - Black/White to ground = Continuity with the switch "off".

A/C regulator Voltage test: Start engine, check voltage by removing the rubber boot from the 4-Prong plug that comes from the Regulator, connect the meter between the White/Yellow and Green Terminals - voltage should read 12.5v - 13.5v through a slow engine rev.

A/C regulator resistance test: Disconnect A/C reg. 2-prong connector and measure resistance between the two wires on the harness side = 0.1 - 1.0ohm.

Note: if the voltage is out of spec on the A/C regulator - replace it, if the Ohms are out, check for broken wires, loose or dirty connections, shorts.

that would stop the starter. mine cranks over, just no sparky :(

Some more - To check the Pulse Generator : Disconnect the generator connector (down above case saver and reverse lever - single wire) Measure resistence between the Blue/Yellow wire and ground = 290 - 360ohms.

Alt. Exciter Coil : Same area, disconnect the Black/Red wire connector and measure resistance between it and ground = 100 - 300ohm.

thanks!!

the coil measured .3 ohm primary and 2.95 kohm on the secondary. that is in spec.
