hey all, I picked up a free 81 185s a few months ago, just been messing with it this week to see if it will run. I think it is a 185s but from what I have read, 185s ment suspension and this one has no suspension. It says 185S on the seat/fender but i realize that it may not be original. Well one of my bigger problems is that one of the rear axle wheel hubs is badly bent, but it does not look like the other ones on ebay. It is two pieces of steel, formed together and it only has three wheel studs. I looked on ebay and the only ones I found have 4 wheel studs. The rims have a total of six wheel bolts, 3 are attached to the stud, 3 are carriage bolts. So....what hub will work for me, can I run the 4 stud hubs on ebay or????

Thanks, I have been lurking for the past few months, lots of good info on here! My shop manual is on its way, just trying to get a head start!

Welcome to 3 Wheeler World! :welcome:

Well you probably still have a 285s because it was just the 1983 that had front suspension. Does your hub look like the one below? Honda started by putting 3 bolt hubs on their trikes but then switched over to the 4 bolt in '82. Your see 6 bolts on your rim because 3 are to bolt the rim to the hub and the other 3 are to hold the 2 halves of the rim together.

Can anyone else confirm this? Will the atc 90 Hub fit?

I know the 90 hub will fit the splines on the axle, I have even gone as far as fitting the hubs off of a Yamaha Tri Moto on a 185. To be certain he needs to confirm the bolt pattern of his hubs or just send a picture. I honestly think someone has made some minor mod's to that 185. I have had a 1983 185 and a 1981 atc 200(Looks like a 185) neither has suspension and both had the 4 bolt patter with the 2 piece rim. I think it is very possible some one switched the hubs and rims from a early 110 or 90. If you need some 185 hubs and rims I have a set I will sell you cheap if you want. The rims have some common Trail pro tires that hold air and have plenty of thread. I also have some extra 3 lug 110 hubs if you are interested. Post a picture of your hub.

Ok, The 1981 185s didn't have suspension, and they used a 3/100 hub ( same or simular to most ATC90's and early ATC110's ).
The 1982 185s's started out with no suspension. But I do believe they added it mid production year. I say this because I bought 2 1982's from one guy ( 15 years ago ). This guy purchased them New from the dealer. One had front suspension while the other one didn't. It was interesting.

Here is some Honda Identification Manual scans that may help.

I dont know if the pic worked but it is definitely a three studded axle hub, very similar to the pic above. So I guess I need to find the older style hubs, I would rather not have to swap rims as well. I am trying to keep this a cheap reliable camp bike and not spend a fortune on it. I also could use some help on rebuilding the recoil starter, I have a bag full of parts! Any good sites for rebuilding? Thanks Mark

The hardest part is putting the main recoil spring in. Here is a thread where I told of a easy way to do this. http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?p=118472

You can find more information on fixing your recoil via a forum search for pullstarter.

P.S. The picture didn't work.

Thanks for the info, I will be looking at that thread shortly. How do you post pics? It asks for the URL, but I really dont know how to find that, I can find the pic on my computer, but cant seem to get it to post. Thanks.
