I just bought a 1987 polaris cyclone recently and just had a couple questions about these quads.
I am running straight pipes right now but am going to buy the stock/OEM muffler for it soon, once i put on the muffler will it still be fairly loud or will the muffler really quiet it off?
And, when i come to a complete stop, and then give it gas to get going again it wants to die, so to get it going I have to pump the throttle, and then when it does getting moving it does fine, andyone know why i have to pump the throttle?
The guy i boght the quad off of said that when a person gives it alot of torque the chain will come off, anyone know why this would happen.

I appoligize for all the questions but I am new to quad, my first one.

Hi I have a old trail boss and a friend has a 87 cyclone, as far as the wanting to stall I would try to adjust the high speed screw on the carb. The machine is rather loud even with the stock exhaust but that would be better than no muffler.( That may even be your problem with the hesitation. )
Your chain might be stretched or your swing arm bushings are shot. If it is the bushings they are not hard to replace, just a little costly. What I did was to buy a swing arm of e-bay with good bushings and installed it.
On that quad if you lose your chain you lose your rear brakes and that’s not fun at all on a hill, been there done that LOL. Over all they can be a good quad ( just not that fast or up to date but great on the trails )had ours for some time now and plain to keep it up and running
Hope this helps Big D

Thank you Big D, that helps a fair bit, i will look for the exhasut first and put it on and see if that fixes my pumping gas problem, if not ill get a carb kit. about the bushing the guy i bought it off of mentioned the bushing and just wanted an experts opinion, you say the bushings are easy to put in, where do the bushings go,i am bran new to quads. so i have no idea about this stuff.
I ahte to bother you, but what numbers on this diagram do you think i would need to fix the chain problem i was thinking 13 14 21 18 16 33 and 17, was i right here is the diagram and what the parts are

Great find on the Cyclone. Got any pics?

Big D right bout the rear brakes, my dad's got a 91 250 Trail Boss. I brought it home to take a link outta the chain so the chain would tighten up right. The front master cylinder doesn't work so the only brakes are the back. Anyway, when I backed it off my tilt bed trailor the chain came off the back sprocket! Dang near backed it into my pond before I got it stopped.

They are kinda a loud machine even with factory pipe and muffler. I dunno how similar the Trail boss motor is to the Cyclone motor, but dad's is 15 years old, no motor problems ever, actually I checked it out yesterday and it has it's first tire leak ever.

alright, thanks for the info, i dont have any pics b/c i have an old film camera, not the digital stuff.I bought the thing for $550 and it works perfect but it needs 150$ muffler 30$ carb kit and maybe 100$ in bushings. I find it a fun machine im only 13 though so I dont need alot of power and such. I am going to buy bushings and on the website i posted on my other thread I think i will buy 21,18,13 and 14. do you guys agree that should fix the cahin problem, thank you.

I would get # 13 14 18 21 and 4#32's There is a right and a left on them so make sure that you put them in where they go.
The early cyclone had two rear shocks do you? They are realy a good quad as long as the person you got it from didn't bet the snot out of it. We use ours all the time mostly for trail ridding, but some times for a tow quad when some of our freinds break a chain or blow there motors. I can't count how many time's it has towed a quad out of the woods lol. As I told you if you chain jumps or breaks you will not have any rear breaks so check your chain before each ride and adjust if needed. This might save you from soiling yourself going down a hill LOL. They have poor front breaks and they are a heavy quad. Feel free to ask questions Big D

Im sure glad you said feel free to ask any question because I have alot of em. I do have the double rear shocks. I am wondering why you say I need #4, the spring? and what are the #32, they are oil seals? what do they do?I dont have any back brakes right know any ways so im not too afraid about the cahin coming off and im not on many hills at all exept ver small ones, but I am looking into the rear brakes, i think the wire from brake wire is broke or siezed. so my questions are now why you say I need #4, the spring? and what are the #32, they are oil seals? what do they do?,,,oh and I was wondering the stock rear shocks dont have gas in them do they?

No I said you need 4 of the part number 32. They are little spacers.
As far as the shocks go they are not rebuildable as far I know. But the spring tension is adjustable for the type of riding you will do.
The cable for the rear brake's is a tough one with out seeing it . I know our's will freeze if we leave it out side in the cold weather. It has moisture in it that I can't seem to dry out. You might want to check Ebay for some parts that you need every once in a while someone is selling older parts for polaris. 87 the trail boss is the same machine exept for the dual shocks. The plastic is the same, motor, just about every thing

Ok, thank you and I will try to get the parts that you said, i am going to see if a place around here has a bushing kit for this quad before I go and order something from the US. Yesterday I went out and put my hands on each rim and tuned and there is about 2 inches of play in the swingarm so I think bushings will come before exhasut and a carb kit might come before exhasut. Thank you for the help you guys.

If it's anything like my Scrambler 3 wheeler then your going to hate it when they tell you the bushings are discontinued. I had a heck of a time finding the one set I got. I sent it to Germany last June ( to have better ones made ) and haven't seen them since. I really got to get a hold of the guy and get them sent back. I know they are safe, but I need them now because I have the ability to make my own. ;)

The diagram at Bikebandit shows where the bushings are and that you can buy them, it doesnt say discontinued like it does on some. SO i hope I can buy them.

Ok, I have another question about the cyclone. I was wondering where do you check the transmission oil and where do you add the trany oil, where do you drain the transmission oil and what kind of oil does the transmission need if it takes oil, which im sure it does. Thank you.

It has a plug to add fluid on the right side of the machine down by the shifter under the brake rotor. As for the drain I forgot. (LOL) I will check on ours tonight and let you know. Fluid I used clutch saver oil.
Here is another tip, If your electric starter works, there is a grease fitting on the starter. You should pump one into it don't over grease it, and don't try to start it with a weak battery. Starting it with a low battery shortens the starter life. I just replaced the starter in ours and it wasn't just a couple of bolts to take out. Stator cover and flywheel have to come off to get it out. Real pain in the butt,

The drain plug is right under the filler hole. I use synthetic gear lube in all my Polaris tranny's. The filler hole bolt will have a magnetic end on it too, so remember to clean it off too.

all right, thank you guys, um...i dont have electric start, I have the muscle building start(pull). I have been thinking and doing some research and stuff and I am going to do a total rebuild on it and try to make her look like this machine.
