I saw a dirt bike in the back of a truck at Wal-mart today. Maybe 250cc range 2 stroke, all white plastic, ROTAX on the right engine case, and a left footed kicker. Looked maybe 5 years old or so. Just got a quick look, the left sided kicker caught my eye. No decals at all on it, may have been aftermarket plastic. Just curious.

well most of the newer atk's use zabel or one of those crazy euro motors, but i think the 250 was a rotax motor that lonestar tried pawning off in a custom race quad called the rebel star that never took off....

It was an ATK, most of the decals fall off ATK's. Acerbis makes ATK plastic.

yeah cannondale made a 440 dirtbike, it was way ahead of its time just like the quads, it had the all aluminium frame that all the new racebikes had, Fuel injection, they where nice bikes, pretty pricy when they came out, now you can pick one up pretty cheap.

ATK actually bought Cannondale and has continued producing the bikes.
The bike you seen was almost definetly an ATK.
ATK famous for the counter shaft disc brake. :wondering
Always thought they were cool bikes.

a buddy of mine has a 1991 ATK 250 dirtbike that is pretty awesome. yea the countershaft brake set up is really trick, works a lot better than a big rotor on the rear hub.

what if your chain breaks? SOL?
thats what the front brake is for. besides I use the front brake to stop and the rear brake to scrub speed.

i'm a big fan of the front break, but i still like to have the rear. I guess that probably never happens anyways as long as you keep up on your maintenance.

I think KTM was the only manufacturer w/ the left side kick, if I remember correctly

Wow this thread is old.
New news!
Today I think that I bought that bike. This is a small town, so I'm sure it is. Supposedly, it's an 1997 260LQ ATK, all the factory decals are off of it, and aftermarket stickers ALL over it. Runs GREAT. This is my first dirt bike and my first ride on a full size bike, I've ridden little 50 and 80's but never bigger.
Where can I look to find a VIN or other ID?
If anyone is very familiar with it, I have lots of questions.

I live about 40 minutes from the ATK factory here in Utah. I almost bought a 97 250LQ a week ago, but bought my KTM instead
ATK now has control over the infamous Cannondale line, and have done wonders in the reliability department with the 440 bikes and quads. I think that all their attention is focused their new 4-stroke line, and their support of the earier 2strokes is being swept under the rug.
The LQ's are honestly a work of art, they are all hand made, and feature only the best componants. They are a Cross Country bike, and their feel takes awile to get used to. They are very competitive offroad, and the suspension is top notch.
The do have some downfalls though, like aftermarket/OEM plastic being non existant. I've heard a lot of complaints about the electrical parts failing, and clutches being similar to a light switch (ON/OFF). Pistons, clutches, and things like that cost more, and are a little harder to get, but I think that it is worth it to be different IMO.
To own an ATK (or anything besides a new CR,KX,RM, or YZ) you have to be resourcefull. You have to know where to look for parts, and trust me the internet is you best friend for that.
Also My Honda 480, 250 and Maico have left kickers, and almost every company that comes to mind had a few bikes this way. You get used to it, it just takes time :)

Thanks for the reply.
I have alot of questions. The only thing I really need is an airfilter, any ideas? This one is falling apart.
Gonna try to take some pics and post em.

That 260 Rotax engine is really close to the the older Rotax tiger engines. It has the same engine mounts as my tiger engines. There is a ATK website that I look at once in awhile. I will post it for you. http://www.atkmotorsports.com/atkbb/

Thanks, I've been looking around there.
Here are some pics. There is NO ID on this bike. Any help confirming that it is a 1997 260LQ? That's what I've been told.

It's got potential that's for sure I like it (trade for a 350X? :naughty: ). The 260's usually had the headlight, spark arestor, and skidplate on them from the factory where as it was an option on the 250's, and why they made a 250, and 260 at the same time I don't know...
Good luck on the air filter... I'm almost certain that Twin-Air made filters for them, but you'd probably have to call them to see for sure.
Good luck
BTW: it's got a Dyno Port pipe which are still avaliable today... good pipes :)
I always wanted an atk I think there badass!

Last night I changed the gearbox oil and drained and filled with new anitfreeze.
Today I cleaned on the motor a little, got all that crap off of it. I love the finish on the motor. It cleaned up really great.
Been riding it every evening to get used to it. TONS of power! Very comfortable ride.
