View Full Version : tri-z fork rebuilding questions.help
i am getting ready to put progressive springs in my 85 tri-z.problem is,i have no manual.does anyone know how much fork oil to put in the forks.can some one check the specs for me.or was there a past thread on fork rebuilding tips that some one can link me to? thanks guys.also does anyone have a recomendation to air pressure to put in these forks also.progressive says none is needed. i weigh 185 lbs. would nitrogen be better? i wont be hammering on this front end real hard.mostly aggresive trail riding and slight mx racing.thanks again guys
check out the Phase 2 yamaha wrench report mods on www.quadpit.com they have specs for the best over-all performance and oil levels for the forks in the artical.

Hey Sloth, that thread is for an 86! On the 85 its 11.7oz if I remember right. Use 10w fork oil. 0 psi air with forks fully extended. Im using 15w and its a little on the heavy side, but I give it a workout on the MX track. I also used the full PVC preload spacers included with the progressive springs, without cutting them down. Im at 175 lbs. Its as easy as dropping the new springs in the top. Im not sure what you mean by a rebuild, but if the forks dont leak, dont change the seals! Ive still got the good originals in mine.
thanks guys that is what i needed to know. any other tips for the progressive springs i have?

Kepp them at 3 for starters. If you find they are a little stiffer than you like, and your not bottoming them out, you can always cut down later. The spacers sit right on top of the springs, so they are easy to pull out and cut down later. For trail riding, you could probably lose the spacers all together, but if you hit the track on occasion, youll need them. The lighter the spring, the smoother the ride, unless youre bottoming out.
cool thanks again. i will take this in advisement.i am goin to do the hole shebang.that way i know it is done.plus the oil i see leaking out(very slight)and seems to have stopped since i have been riding it,is really nasty looking.greyish black.so i am just goin to rebuild the front end completely.it is the last thing i have to do to the z.finally lol.

Its just chunks of PVC plimbing pipe, the hard plastic stuff at the hardware store, cut to fit in the forks.
