Ok, guys, my new front tire will be here today so i was just out there looking at this front end. Maybe someone could save me alot of work because it seems to me that everything has to come off the front to get the fork off so I can replace the tire. Does anyone know for sure. I don't want to take EVERYTHING off if I don't have to.

Lift the machine up and get the front tire off the ground. Then on the one side of the axle, there is a clamp held on by 4 10mm nuts. Loosen the nuts up. Then remove the 4 lug nuts, then finish removing the 4 10mm nuts and the axle should pull towards the back and the tire & rim should come right off. Removing a tire on these only takes 5 minutes with hand tools, and normally less than 1-2 minutes with power tools. ;)

Yes the whole shabang has to come apart. Take the brake cable loose. Loosen the 4 small axle cap nuts some. Put a wrench on the end of the axle and break it loose, then back it out. As you get it out a ways take the 4 small nuts loose on the axle cap and pull the cap off. Then back the axle the rest of the way out. Shes off then. Be carefull with it. The axle can fall out, and the drum cover will fall off also if you dont watch it. Not a big deal. Install is in the reverse. Not bad at all

Actually Clay you don't have to remove the axle out of the brake side. Once the lug nuts and the cap nuts are removed, you can manover the wheel off the axle by twisting the axle / fork back. It saves a whole lot of work. ;)

A couple more questions...
1) does the speedo gearbox just slide off there or what? I've never had one of these before so I'm stumped. I don't want to mess this up.
2) on the tire it says it's a two piece rim. again, I never messed with one of those. So can I mount this tire up myself or should i take it to a shop to have it done?

Ok. That is not a two piece rim. Thats the stock SX Rim. The tire may say (dont mount on a 2 piece rim). As far as the speedo gear. You will have to completely back the axle out of the fork leg. Then slide the axle out of the hub. THen slide the gear off the axle. Be Careful not to ruin the speedo dust seal. Also be carefull pulling the axle out and threading it back into the fork leg. You dont wont to cross thread it. A metal axle with a aluminum fork leg can cause problems if you dont pay attention to what your doing. ON the side of the speedo gear should be a small phillips head screw. Take the screw out and the cable will pull right out of the to of the gear. Install is the reverse. Its not tough man. Your doing good. Go ahead and pull it all down. THen unbolt the lug buts and the hub will fall out. I would then check the bearings and take the brake hub cover off, rinse it out, and inspect the brakes. This way you wont have to take it back down a few months from now to replace the front brake shoes or axle bearings.

you have to pull that axle out of the hub. then the speedo will slide off.
that rim is not a 2 piece rim. are you sure the tire doesn't say, not for a 2 piece rim?

EDIT: OH DOY!!!! I misread that one!!! do not use...
I'm gonna go out and mess with this a bit. i should be able to figure it out. BUT check back often cause i may need more help! :wondering

Ok, I got the front brake line diconnected. The axle is off the forks but I've been turning and turning it and it's not coming out. do you hammer it out or is it threaded or what? Am i missing something here?
From what i gather I have to back the axle out on the side the speedo is on correct?
Oh, shawn. I plan on taking it to a tire shp if i ever get this thing off of here.

Put a wood block on the threaded end of the axle and hit it with a hammer. It will slide right out. Its not threaded.

Oh man dude.................I went thru the same thing!
Ya know who's fault that is don't you, the former owners fault
Simply from not taking it off once in a while and lubing the axle up.
Not fun at ALL to get that off. Took me hours of (hate to say it) using the sledge!
You may need my services to help you out or did you manage your self?
I have the (spare) whole brake backing plate and shoes for one.

hey buddy! What do ya mean? do you have an extra set of pads or just one.
Well, i was out there pounding on it and it looks like it ain't budgin! Everything started out good this morning but as you can see something that seemed simple is quickly turning in to a nightmare... Time for a beer break!
Are you going to be around at all Mr. Huff? in the next couple days??? :naughty:

Tell me about it. When I was working on my SX, it took me 2 days just to get the axle loose. You're lucky you're this far.
And I'm quite lucky that the local tire-shop guy here is nice. My dad bought 3 new knobbies from him a few months ago for the Big Red, and all we had to do was drop the 3 wheeler off with him, he'd put the tires on, and then we picked it up the next day. It was so simple.. and he did it for free :).

Spray some lube on that axle and let it stick straight up in the air for a while and let it sit a. Spray it periodicallly. Its either the bearing race is froze to the axle or the internal spacer is frozen. I think those have a internal spacer. Dont screw those threads up on the axle. If you do it will screw the fork leg up when you go to mount it. Worse comes to worse. Take the hub assembly axle and all and soak it in a bucket of diesel fuel. Its thin enough to work its way in there and free it up. Do it over night, submerged. It should break loose then. Take the pads off first. LOL. FOr new pads try www.hyperparts.com

Maybe you can take the cable loose and snake the wheel over the gear.

Ok Bro. Take the cable loose from the gear. THe little silver screw is what needs to come out. With it out, you can pull the cable out the top. Do that first. THen with the lug nuts off, slide the the wheel over the hub and axle assembly and then over the speedo gear. Thats all it takes. If the fork leg gets in the way. Loosen the 3 bolts on they tripple tree that hold it in there and pull the fork leg out. You will definately be able to slide it off then. If howdy says the center of the wheel hole is big enough for the speedo gear to go thru, you can bank on it.

Well.... all pre 83 trikes did. The 81-82 250R's had two piece rims... not just the small ones!

There is a little notch on the speedo gear that has to fit on the little ear on the hub. If its not there it prob wont work. Just take it all off and send it to me. I will try and salvage it.:D
