Hey guys. Im thinking about geting a quad of some type. Im looking to spend $2500 to $3000. I have looked at a lot of stuff. One bike that seems to be a good size is a Yamaha Warrior. I have heard that they have had a lot of rear axle bearing problems though. Whats you opinion on them? I have looked at 400ex's but they seem to be a bit more money. Would the Warrior have a decent amount of power? I have owned a 350X so I would want something somewhat close to that. Im 6'3" 285 also. ANy other bikes im not seeing. I want something fairly good sized, comfortable and with a decent amount of power. I currently have a 87 250SX, but it is just too small. I want something bigger. Opinions? The warriors I have been eyeballing are the late 90s and early 2000's.

I rode one not that long ago.
Good power, the electric start and reverse are SWEET.
Correct me if I'm wrong but when you refer to the rear bearing issue, are you meaning the completely-demented Yamaha chain adjusting system at the rear axle carrier?
I can say with experience that that is one cobbed-up mess.
Funny how the new Yamaha's are starting to adopt the Honda-type eccentric adjustment. Hmmm.....

Don't expect a TON of power out of them.
They held their own back in the day but they're nothing to write home about nowadays.
AND they're not worth throwing money at if big power is what you're looking for.
Get a hotter quad to start with if you're wanting big power.
I do have a nice TRX250R for sale, $2000.....nudge, nudge.... ;)

Other than that, I wouldn't mind owning a Warrior.

If you like your 350x and want something close to that, 400 ex is the only answer.
I have both. I'm about your size. A slip on exhaust , kn filter, 152-155 main and a 42 pilot jet , drop needle one, and you'll have a nice ride. 02-03 models are in that price range around here. Don't settle for second best, you will find a good 400ex.

The warrior is very under powered. If your looking for a quad in that price range for sure buy a 400ex.

Thanks for the help guys. Im thinking more and more about the 400ex. I have just seen a large number of warriors for pretty good prices. But, I have always been a Honda guy.

I would say go with the 400EX, they have a huge aftermarket, and they are very reliable too, Nothing against warriors, but I think the 400 is better.

Count me in for a 400EX vote. Can't go wrong with the EX. Endless possibilities and mods/parts.

I had an 87 warrior, i did not find it under powered at all, i had a Cobra jet pipe on it, and a few other stuff, and it would go pretty good, and wheelie like mad. I put mud tires on it, mainly because the trails i rode, you needed them, or a 4x4 quad.

Heres a pic for yea.

I put those round headlights on there because the stock square ones where beat and looked bad.

Polaris Scrambler 500. If you don't mind Automatic. Has elec. start, reverse, liquid cooled w/ fan assist, on demand 4x4 and VERY big quad, big gas tank, they will run about 55mph and are easy to maintain.

Clay I love my EX. It has good power stock and plenty of aftermarket add ons to go the distance if you want.... The ex is coming way down in price...here in Ok they range from $2000-$3000 depending on mods but don't go much over $3000...Chris

Hey have you ever looked at the Raptor 660 or Better yet if you dont want to Mod anything to get the best trail bike look at the Z400. It has better suspension, 3 More HP, Liquid cooled for less of a power loss during time, DOHC and has reverse compaired to the 400ex. The Suzuki z400 is by far way better then the 400ex its faster and handles better plus since it's liquid cooled it wont lose as much power due to heat as a air cooled engine will. Plus if you want the power of a raptor But it to handle like its on rail then just get the Z400 and put a jet and pipe kit on it and that thing will beat the Raptor with equal riders.

The suspension is almost identical between the ex and z. Also if you get a newer 400ex you get reverse too. To answer the question of a warrior or a 400ex, having seat time on both I'd take a 400ex hands down.

The warrior is a heavy tank that leaves alot to be desired in the handleing department. If you want a machine for a good price that you are just gonna trail run and so forth, then the warrior will do fine. I have had one for the past few years that I got for the wife. I ride it on occasion and its not the fastest nor the most powerful, but it just keeps on going!!! A 400EX is more powerful and handles better, but unless you find one that is not beat to *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* within the price range you are looking for, the warrior will do fine.
