And about the helicopter, that's just how tall some of those dunes are.

Yes. The Imperial Sand dunes is one giant area of dunes that includes places like Glamis, Ogilby, Gordons Well, Buttercup, Patton Valley etc. It's freakin' enormous.

Best description I've heard about dunes is, riding dunes is like riding God's roller coaster.

This was only my 3rd trip to the dunes. I'm originally a midwesterner like a lot of you. Trust me, you have NO idea what you're missing. MX and trails and all that is fun but nothing compares to dune riding. You can ride as hard or as mellow as you want. Your first couple times out there you end up doing things that don't even look possible, then you do it and it's no big deal. Like enormous off-camber dunes that look like there's no way you could possibly stick to them but since it's sand you just keep on the power and the rear end will slide down just a bit and keep you going. I'm not 100% comfortable out there yet but getting there. This trip I only had one "ABORT!" moment where I ran up a dune to find it was way steeper than I expected on the other side and pulled a 180 so I could take a different line. You can see a big difference between the way someone that hasn't ridden dunes much (like me for example) rides the dunes and the way someone with a lot of experience in dunes (like Kasey) will attack them. I still creep up to most of the razorbacks and ride along the edge and peak over. Kasey just jumps over them like a crazy person.

Getting out to the less ridden sections where there's a lot of virgin sand is pure bliss. About the only thing I can compare it to for you guys is fresh snow. Only better.

All I can say is WOW. F#$^ I want to move out there. That's sick. You look like you had a great time.

We have taken several trips to Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan, but that is NO comparison.

Who is the guy that hosts the trips from NY to Glamis? I want to get the guys together and head to CA!!

If you haven't been then it needs to be on your list of "things to do before you die." I can't wait to go again. Big thanks to Dammit for letting me crash at his place & to Kasey for the use of the 350X.

I bet that ice racer of yours would make a wicked dune bike with some simple adjustments.

the reason i asked if glamis was also called imperial is cause i bought one of my 250r"s from a guy in san diego. my wife and i made the trip nonstop from louisiana to san diego taking turns sleeping. we saw this sign saying imperial dunes and it looked like we drove right through them. being from la i had never seen a sight like this before and was pretty awe struck. what was really bad was on the way back with my new to me 250r we had to have the hammer down all the way back, to get home for work reasons. so we couldn't stop. it looked like an awsome place. we didn't see to many people maybe cause it was the middle of july and hot as hell.:)

You went right between Gordons Well and Buttercup on the I-8. Glamis is a ways north of there. You cannot get a good feel for the magnitude of the place from the highway though, even as impressive as it is. You can get a better look at Glamis driving along SR78.

I wish I knew that you were going to be there this weekend. I was there and camped at Gecko road about 3 miles south of the drags. It would have been fun to meet you guys! I did see quite a few ATC's racing up Oldsmobile hill this weekend, was it any of you?

Coulda seen me any day Saturday thru Monday at almost any place around the Glamis area. I camp'd @ wash 10 with a bunch of freestyle MX'rs, woah talk about some rough ride'n... Check the pic of this guy jump'n a 100' gap! I got someone to take a few of me just fart'n around camp but most of the good rides were just ballz out FAST and all I could do to just keep up with them 450 bikes... Wish you woulda called me Doug, its been years since I got to ride with other trikes!?!?

Sorry man. I brought it up a couple times but there was so much fusterclucking crap happening all weekend eating into riding time it just didn't happen.

This is why we really need to get everyone organized to camp in one area someday. I know it would be a pain but not as much of a pain as trying to find people in that zoo. We could get a pretty big group going out there. Would be cool.

i second that..... next time we will have to just set on down on time and place and not show late..... all the good spots where taken when i got there .... we ended up by the canal.... and so..... next time we go ill name the spot and STAY THERE...

YEP, it was quite the ZOO yet FUN to deal with IMO. So when we gonna camp together? Tha will be one of the only ways to make it work out that we ALL meet up and RIDE finaly.

P.S. anyone play with Sobie Bombs! I've got it down and makes for quite the evening camp intertainment. Theres a huge fire ball above what you can see in the pic too...

What exactly is a sobie bomb anyway?

02-23-2006, 03:00 AM
put gas in a sobe bottle... light the bottle... SHOVES the gas out... makin it torch.... you cna do the same with starbucks caps... jsut punch a whole in the lid

AZ250R
02-23-2006, 05:11 PM
What he ^ said, sort of. Any bottle with a screw on lid seems to work... sort of. Sobie bottles just seem engineered right for it. Fill half with gas, screw on lid, place in burning fire, watch fountain-jet of fire, then blast of fireball into the atmosphere! The bottles dont' even break!?!?!?
Great way to let someone know where you are in the dunes IMO.

I saw a few of those blasting around the camp sites. Didn't know what they were. Sounds like fun. :)

we actully have a sobe bomb holder made out of a piece of metal pipe conduate with two horse shoes on the bottom of support and the best way to do it is to take the sobe bottle and fill it to the neck make sure the cap is on tight and put a very small pin hole in the top of the cap, slide it into the sobe holder, but put the holder in first and get it really hot then slide the bottle in it and barrie the the bottom of the holder in red hot ash and sit back and watch. here is video i took of our its at the end of the video. http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=ryan+kiley+dune+sound

so cool...I always wondered what and how those fireballs go off...approx 6 ft, diameter fireball and it goes up about 20 feet in the air...

Thanks duners:welcome: ...time to bring a sixer of sobe' with me next time....

heck, I might even buy some sobe' stock:w00t:
