i know there are some of you who can make a old fender look like new. so how do i do it? i know i have to sand them smooth but how do i get the polished look back? what kind of compound are you using? i sanded a area with 1200 grit today and it still looked dull.
thanks

You need to go the whole way to 2000 atleast, and you need to sand it ALOT withi 2000 grit. When you've sanded it so much that you can't feel your hand anymore, do it 3 more times. After that, I usually take a buffer and rubbing compound to it. If that doesn't get it shiny, I take a torch to it and "flame kiss" it.
Here is a picture of the 350X fender I sanded and "flame kissed"

This isn't actually going to be used on my X.. I got Maier's all around for the X so I can keep my original plastics looking good.

a heat gun works really good for doing that. also dont have to worry about that torch flame melting the plastic. i tried a butane torch. and ended up with 3 melted spots that required alot more sanding to get out

so you just sand it way down all the way to 2000 grit then take a lighter and go across the whole plastic?

Iv always dones good ol' WD40. Hehe, or used motor oil on a rag. Just it catches alot of dirt.

I've used starbrite plastic scratch remover with a air polisher after wetsanding down to 2000. always comes out good... I just hate sanding...lol But when she's done everything looks great...
