i have an 89 quadzilla, it used to run great and then it started doing wierd stuff. It would rev itself WAY up out of control like it was going to blow the motor. People told me it was an air leak in the top end somewhere so i changed all the topend gaskets a few days ago and even put on a new carb intake boot. it wouldnt kick over so i had someone pull me behind my truck, it finally fired up but it would rev itself up and down and what not. I would just hold the gas and sometimes it would take off and other times it wouldnt do anything, finally it died down the road and i had to push it home. I've had it with this thing and it's not making me like suck-zuki any more than i did. some of you may remember it from TF04, it hasnt ran right since before that! i've had it sitting in the garage in the way collecting dust for the last year! any info would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Seeing as how it has been sitting for so long I am sure you have cleaned the carb, if there was any gas in the tank, drain and replace it with fresh stuff and toss in a new plug, Im not sure how those quadzilla's work with the oil, if it is oil injected, if there was any oil in it drain and replace it too, hope this helps.

I would pull the side cover and check for a loose crank bearing. That would cause an air leak and make it run like crap.

seals and bearings!!! it is lean, that is why it is reving do high.

THERE is only one way a 2 stroke will rev up without throttle!!! its getting air from somewhere,, and if your transmission is not using oil its got to be the stator side,,, maybe a base gasket but one thing is for sure its getting air from somewhere...........

You definetly have an air leak. I am having the same trouble with my TRI-Z. If you can get it started again, use the old starting fluid trick. Spray it around areas where you might have a leak. You will be able to tell when you hit the leak. Watch running it much with it leaking like that. It is probably also causing to run real lean...

You missed one, Kasey. If you interrupt gas flow it will rev up too. In addition to what everybody said about checking for air leaks, make sure gas flows through the petcock okay, and your float/needle assembly are not hanging up, or getting clogged, but if its not periodically dying now and then, and intake or crank leak is more likely.
I once ran into a similar problem due to a gas cap that was not venting properly.

to check for leaks jsut do an air test. all you need is a bike pump, a correctly sized rubber freeze plug, a correctly sided pvc pipe cap, a valve stem, and a pressure gauge.
1. the freeze plug plugs the exhaust.
2. the pipe cap has to fit in the intake
3. drill a hole in the pipe cap and install the valve stem.
4. drill and tap the cap and install a 15psi pressure gauge.
5. place the cap in the intake and clamp it down.
6. use the BIKE pump (no air compressor) and pump the engine up to 6psi.
it should hold for at least 6 minutes. use soapy water in a squirt bottle to find the leak. be sure to check the tranny vent since one seal will vent out of it.
i have a link that i can post tomorrow

ok guys thanks for the info so far, i'll try and work on it tomorrow and see what happens. Sorry i dont know a dam thing about 2 strokes:eek: . someone else mentioned the crank bearings/seals so i'll have to check into that. anybody ever do crank bearings/seals on one of these? How hard is it and what kind of price am i looking at? not to be dumb but could it be sucking air from a bad side case gasket? I didnt replace those. thanks

I once ran into a similar problem due to a gas cap that was not venting properly. If I had a dime for every time that happened ..... beat me to it Tim:beer. The only thing I might add is, In trouble shooting, I always stick to the rule: "Fuel flow, then air flow, then electrical".

what if i take the gas cap off and run it? that'd tell me if it's the cap wouldnt it? if thats it i'm going to feel like a dumb***.

well the lt500's had a problem with the crankcase bearings spining in the case, does it blow any coolant or steam out the overflow uhnder normal use. another thigng is when ity idles really hight pull the choke, if it dies down its an air leak.

I'm not sure about it blowing coolant or steam out, i havent noticed. Once i get some cash i think i'll check out the crankcase bearings. This really sucks, I was hoping to have it running the other day because I planned on working out a deal with you but if it doesnt run, it isnt worth as much.

to check the main bearings take hold of the flywheel and try and move it up and down and left and right. also the pilot jets in the 500 should go up a few sizes from stock, less fuel at idle makes it rev wierid. if you still have the stock carb the slides wear out and suck air around them which also causes an air leak.
