ok my tri moto 125 is pissing me off. ok i know all the tricks... at least i thought. the damn thing wont fire. i pulled the plug and placed it on the block and it sparks like a mother $&&*%^. i sprayed either up the carb and it still wont fire. so its getting gas and its getting fire but aparently not at the right time. oh yeah .... will a 2 stroke fire with no exhaust... it should at least studder and i got nothing.

give it a shot of starting fluid in the sparkplug hole, then it will run for a second. i'd say clean the carb real good and check the adjustments on it.

Most 2 stokes that I know of won't start with out a exhaust on do to not enough back presure

You dont really time a 2 stroke. The only thing that makes it out of time is if the keyway for the magneto is worn out or if the key is broken or missing. You only need three things for an engine to run. You say you have two, spark and fuel. Try putting your thumb over the spark plug hole and kick/pull the engine over. It should blow your thumb off when the compression stroke hits. If it does you have all three elements. If its true that it need backpressure to run, you'll have to take care of that. Its true that if the carburetor isnt clean you should put the ether in the cylinder instead of spraying it in the air cleaner. Also, is the engine smoking at all when you try to start it? If so thats a good sign. Since its a 2 stroke, if the compression is weak, put a few drops of oil in the cylinder (the spark plug hole) to create lubrication and to make a seal for better compression. Hope this helps.

Did you replace your spark plug? Always do that first, and make sure your carb and jets are spotless. Make sure there is gas going into the carb and that the furl line isnt clogged. I wouldnt try and start it without a pipe, you will have no backpressure, and as far as I know, it will not want to start, that right there could be your problem!

Sounds like a compression problem. Try replacing the spark plug like Yamahauler said and see what happens. You may need a top end job, or at least gaskets.

sounds like low compression. rebuilding the top end would be a breeze on that thing.

This is all very good info guys. does most of it hold true for a 4 stroke as well. I'm having a hell of a time getting my grizzly started (I also posted about this in the quad forum) but Don't really get to many replies over there. Sorry to post whore but I'm becoming desprate for info at this point.

Do you have a compression tester? I'm assuming you replaced the plug and cleaned the carb?

ok i just got in from jaking with my 125.... i put my thumb over the plug hole and i didn't get hardly any preasure. i put 90 wt oil in the cylindar and i got a lot more preasure off of that. but when i put the plug in it still would not start. so i know i need new rings and a "top end" what all does that entitle..... just rings?

You will have to measure the bore and the piston to see that they are in spec, you will want new gaskets and rings for sure.
