Well I know Its not a trike But I need ideas/help. I posted in the quad section but got limited response.

Its an 86 zuki 230 QS. The motor is bone stock not even a pipe. Ive had the carb apart numerous times and is clean enough to eat out of (soaked sprayed and blew out with a compressor). Ive ran 2 tanks of premium through it with gunk cleaner in both. Ive put a new spark plug in and cleaned the airfilter. and had the AFR screw from 1-3.5 turns out currently at stock 2 3/8.

Now on to the problem. when given constant gas it wants to sputter and cut out. doesnt idle now for crap (idles down real slow, will have a high idle then will drop off and die). Runs great when revving through the gears. 1st -3rd gear wants to sputter and cut out when throttle is constant. 4th-6th are fine even when being lugged. So now Ive exhausted all my ideas and others and need new ones

Can ya help???

You may need to check and see if you float is soaking gas and getting heavy. I dunno? Have you rebuilt it with a kit? If not, thats the first thing I would do! Good Luck!

When trikes do that it's time for a carb kit. bad jets and needle.

Check the absolute easiet 1st.

Take fuel tank cap off and make sure that isn't clogged and not letting the tank breath. Clogged it forms a vacum and won't let the gas flow right. Run the motor with it off and see if you notice any improvement.

2nd ........take fuel petcock out and check filter that attaches to it and goes in tank. Yours may or may not have one. Clean the petcock bowl too, again, if it has one.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried with the gas cap off and had the petcock out to be cleaned and still the same.

Guess Ill buy a carb rebuild kit for her

Thanks again

sometimes the chokes on these machines are tricky...look into that too.

A slow return to idle usually (but not always) means an air leak somewhere past the carb. Check the intake boot for cracks or loose clamps. I would also check the head gasket for a leak. Shoot some WD-40 around the boot and head while its running - if it rev's, you have a leak. Wear eye protection and don't use alot of spray.

It seems to be running more on the richer side. The plug gets real sooted up. And adjusting the afr screw doesnt seem to do anything. Picking up the carb rebuild kit on Fri will know how that helps after Easter.

Have a good weekend every one and eat like it may be your last meal!!

Picking up the carb rebuild kit on Fri will know how that helps after Easter. That could mean nothing or that you have oil seeping past the rings ..... try the wd-40 or starter fliud trick .... thats probably it. Could also be a sticking trottle cable too (forgot to mention that before). Again, a high starting RPM, slow return to idle .... 9/10 air-leak, even more so than a sticky cable. An overly rich condition would mean a hard start and a low or non idle, as well as poor high RPM performance.

Got the carb rebuild kit in and set to stock.

Wicked...................... I think you are right about the air leak, had to turn afr screw out to 3.5 to get the darn thing to idle right . used your WD-40 trick to no avail, doesnt change idle at all. had air passage off all the way to the airbox and couldnt find any leaks or cracks.

Dont know?????

I'm thinking gas and a match would be a good fix for it.
